Woman accused of abusing dozens of dogs and storing dead pups in home freezer is rearrested, faces up to 95 charges

An Arizona woman accused of animal abuse after authorities found 55 lifeless dogs in her home — and five puppy corpses hidden in a freezer — has been rearrested and faces up to 95 counts of forfeiture in the gruesome case .

April McLaughlin, 48, was initially charged in September with dozens of charges related to alleged animal abuse and neglect, but a bureaucratic snafu sent the case back to local police, who ultimately charged her again with 77 misdemeanor counts last week.

Police have also turned over nine counts of felony animal cruelty and nine other counts against McLaughlin to the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office, though those charges are still under review, authorities said.

Officers began investigating McLaughlin on September 9 when a veterinary professional called them about the condition of three dogs kept at his home.

Police eventually raided the home and made the gruesome discovery of dozens of dogs living in their own feces without water, authorities said.

During the search, police also found five dead puppies stuffed into a refrigerator, which was kept near food for other animals, officials said.

The animal was housed as part of the Special Needs Animal Welfare League, a shelter Mclaughlin runs.

The 55 dogs were removed from the squalid home on September 22, and five of them had to be euthanized, AZ Family reported.

Mclaughlin has denied the allegations against his shelter, and he told police during an interview that there was nothing wrong with the way he kept dead dogs near food.

Last month, 34 of the dogs were paired with animal rescues. The suspect is still fighting to get the 13 dogs back.

McLaughlin posted his $1,000 bond and was released from jail Thursday, Fox 10 reported.
