A woman was filmed desperately clinging to the hood of a speeding car in downtown Los Angeles after thieves inside stole her French bulldog.
Ali Zacharias was enjoying lunch with her puppy, Onyx, at the Whole Foods at Grand Avenue and 8th Street at about 2:30 p.m. on January 18 when a stranger began calling the dog, who was sitting at her feet below table, he told KTLA.
The woman then grabbed the dog’s leash and started walking away with it. Zacharias said he initially thought it was a simple mistake.
“I didn’t think that someone had stolen my dog,” Zacharias said. “I thought it was a misunderstanding, so I said, ‘That’s my dog. I’m sorry,’ and he didn’t listen.”
The woman got into a getaway car that was waiting nearby. Zacharias tried to get inside but said the car was full with four other people inside. They pushed him out and locked the door, he said.

Panicking, Zacharias got in front of the car screaming for help, but “no one came.”
“The next thing I know, the car plowed into me and I fell on the hood,” he told the outlet.
Witness Harrison Pessy, who recorded the horrific ordeal on video, said he was walking down the street when he heard screeching tires and a woman screaming. He then saw the white vehicle flying down the road as Zacharias held on for his life on the hood.
“It was horrible,” Zacharias recalled. “As he started going faster and faster, I was like, ‘I’m about to die. This is my death. Now. I’m dying.’”

The suspect drove several blocks with Zacharias still on top before a sharp turn knocked him to the ground.
He reported the incident to the LAPD, who had scoured the area for surveillance footage of the robbery and escape. Police described the vehicle as a newer white Kia Forte sedan with a missing hub cap on the driver’s side, according to KTLA.
Onyx, a black Merle French bulldog with a spotted coat and different colored eyes, is still missing.
“They stole my son from me,” said Zakarias. “I just pray that I can get it back.”

He said he offered a significant reward for the return of his dog.
French bulldog puppies, now the most popular dog in the country, regularly fetch more than $1,000 dollars.
“If someone tried to steal my dog, I would probably try to kill him myself,” Pessy told KTLA. “It’s sad that someone would take someone’s animal.”
