A woman was found dead on a Los Angeles beach on Friday – just hours after her boyfriend reported her missing.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as 31-year-old Jennifer Hanie.
A lifeguard made the gruesome discovery around 10:13 a.m. near Manhattan Beach, a popular park along the South Bay known for surfing.
Hanie was reported missing around 6:40 a.m., just minutes before sunrise, according to police.
“The reporting party stated he last saw his girlfriend near the waterline,” Manhattan Beach police said in a statement.
“The reporting party and his friends searched for the woman, and when they did not find her, they contacted MBPD.”
Police, along with Los Angeles County Lifeguards and the US Coast Guard, launched an intense beach and ocean search for Hanie.

It’s unclear whether Hanie washed ashore in the hours after the missing person’s report — her cause of death was not immediately released.
The tragedy is still under investigation.
