A woman with a severe dairy allergy died days after eating tiramisu advertised as “vegan,” prompting an investigation into the dessert maker.
Anna Bellisario, who was 20 at the time of her death last year, was out for dinner with her boyfriend at a vegan burger chain called Flower Burger in Milan, Italy, on January 26, 2023, when she ate a dish called “Tiramisun Mascherpa,” the newspaper reported Italian Corriere della Sera.
Bellisario, who is a fashion student, reportedly checked the label on the tiramisu and asked for “more information” about the desert before eating it.
After eating just a few spoonfuls, he started coughing and had trouble breathing. He tried to make himself vomit and took the asthma medication and cortisone he had with him, but he ended up losing consciousness after going into anaphylactic shock.
He was in a coma for 10 days at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan before dying on Feb 5, 2023. He had a dairy allergy from birth and had visited the restaurant before, the Mirror reported.
A mother and daughter who run a pastry company that supplies the pre-made tiramisu to Flower Burger and 63 other restaurants are now being investigated for murder, according to Corriere della Sera.
The Post contacted Flower Burger for comment.

Italian Insider identified the pastry company as Tiramisun when the store reported the incident last year.
After the incident, the Italian Ministry of Health ordered the “vegan” tiramisu to be recalled after it was suspected to contain milk.
Traces of milk and milk protein were found in tiramisu products from the Tirimisun brand and traces of eggs were found in the sandwich mayonnaise Bellisario ordered for his meal, the Mirror reported.

It is believed that Tiramisun may have “mixed up” the production line for their vegan pastries with their dairy-based desserts, according to Metro.
Judge Fiammetta Modica called the incident “an alarming picture of irresponsibility.”
The Post was unable to reach someone from Tiramisun for comment.
