Wynonna Judd Reveals The Last Thing She Said To Mother Naomi Judd

Singer Wynonna Judd is starting to feel more comfortable talking about the death of her own mother, Naomi Judd, after she took her own life about five months ago on April 30 at the age of 76.

The two have been part of the country music duo known as The Judds, and are set to continue their final tour in September. Unfortunately, Wynonna had to tour solo, although she had the support of several country music stars to support her on stage, such as Brandie Carlile. She also had the love and support of her sister, Ashley Judd, who found Naomi’s body and stayed with her for thirty minutes until paramedics arrived.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, Wynonna admitted that she’s still trying to come to terms with her mother’s decision to end her own life, even though she’s been battling depression for a long time and has been outspoken.

During a lengthy conversation with PEOPLE magazine, Wynonna admitted, “I can’t wrap my head around it and I don’t know that I ever will. That he left the way he did.”

“That’s how confusing and insidious mental illness is,” he added. “You have to make peace with the fact that you don’t know. Sometimes there is no answer.”

He said that Naomi “is always determined, no matter what happens to her”. She reflects on Naomi’s experience of being “fired” and “forgotten,” before recalling how she was “a single white woman raising two babies by herself on welfare and food stamps. He never gave up.”

Although she still grieves for her mother, Wynonna said she had to “just go to the next step. Then go two more,” adding, “Sometimes that’s enough.” Although he was hesitant to do The Judds: The Final Tour solo, some of the biggest names in country music offered to support him on tour.

Stars such as Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Little Big Town join her on stage for the next several months on tour as she celebrates her mother’s life and legacy. “I have to celebrate that joy as much as I can,” Wynonna said. “That’s part of the reason I’m doing the tour.”

In the months leading up to her mother’s death, Wynonna had toured with her husband, drummer Cactus Moser, while Naomi stayed home. “It was very painful for him [my mom] because his favorite place is on the road and with me and [my sister] Ashley,” Wynonna recalled. “He was alone a lot. So we lost touch. One of my regrets is that I was too busy. He often talks about how lonely the house is without us.

In a heartbreaking confession, Wynonna revealed that the last time she saw her mother alive was at the CMT Awards on April 11. At the event, they sang their hit song, “Love Can Build a Bridge.”

“The last thing I said to him was ‘I love you,’ and I’m so grateful for that,” Wynonna recalled.

Although she’s still struggling to grieve her mother’s death, Wynonna admits, “I’ve accepted it as much as I can, humanly,” adding, “Acceptance and then surrender, and what comes after that is finding meaning.”

Now, she hopes that talking and talking about depression will help others get help before it’s too late. “There’s not a single person on the planet who hasn’t been exposed to some form of depression,” Wynonna said. “People who need or want help, some will ask and some won’t.”

“I will take every opportunity to celebrate life because everything is a gift in this life,” he added. “Your breath, your heartbeat, the next day. Perhaps his greatest legacy is that in the dark, there is light.”
