The actor likes to play strong, stubborn characters Yellow jacket the character of Van Palmer, something he should be awarded, but Hewson has taken himself out of the race. As long as the category remains gendered, they have no choice.

Hewson identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them. “There’s no place for me in the acting category,” Hewson told me Diversity. Being lumped into the male or female category is unfair to them.

All award shows, such as the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, etc., have Best Actor and Actress categories. “It is not right for me to submit myself as an actor. It doesn’t make sense for me to join hands with those boys.”

They continued. “It’s quite simple and not very loaded. I cannot commit myself to this because I have no space.

At one point last year, the young performer was being considered alongside Christina Ricci and Melanie Lynskey for consideration for the acting category. However, Hewson did not feel comfortable and chose to be sidelined.

Instead, some non-binary performers have decided the award is more important than the gender title and relegated it to their respective categories. Emma D’Arcy of Dragon House fame is one.

Hewson also points out that the best director and cinematographer categories have nothing to do with gender, making a strong case for the acting category. However, Hewson will not hold rallies outside of signs and such.

On the contrary, he said. “You can keep things the way they are now – I’m not going to take part,” Hewson said it was worth a look. “It is worth talking about. And I gently and respectfully ask people to turn around a little bit.”

Grammy Categories Not Gender

Hewson isn’t wrong about other awards shows. The Grammys and many other music award shows do not gender their categories. The Brit Independent Film Awards decided to go genderless this year and found themselves in a best actor category full of men, and not a single woman was considered.

When they introduced the idea, they were optimistic. “You start thinking: ‘Why do we have this division? We do not do this in the directing category or any other category. What is good or bad?’ We see the kind of performances we see that don’t necessarily fit the mold of the lead and supporting cast.”

According to New York Times, the Indie Brit Awards are currently reviewing that decision, and there’s a good chance it could go back to its old ways next year. Hewson sees this fact as rather sad.

“We have all agreed that equality is impossible. And that’s sad.” Hewson shares the screen with Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Néliesse, Courtney Eaton, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sophie Thatcher. He said it was like a family.

However, he knows that this job requires you to pick your battles. “We’re not going to start awarding best female and male director, or female or male cinematographer because we all understand that would be implicitly insulting.”
