Young mom found dead days after being arrested for repeatedly calling 911, begging for help

A young Oklahoma mother has been found dead on a barge in the Mississippi River – days after she was arrested for repeatedly calling 911 for help.

Hailey Silas’ body was found around 7 a.m. Saturday as the barge’s crew was doing an inspection while traveling on the Mississippi River near Shelby Forest in Tennessee, WREG reported.

Less than a week earlier, the 22-year-old mother was arrested for calling 911 several times Sunday from a gas station across from the Southland Casino, according to the outlet.

He reportedly asked authorities to give him a ride out of West Memphis, Arkansas, because he was afraid of something and had a “panic attack.”

After Silas was taken to the station in handcuffs, he asked to speak to his parents, saying he was scared and confused, according to WREG.

It was not clear what she was afraid of, but the young mother also asked to be taken to a “psych ward,” the report said.

He pleaded guilty last Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of raising a false alarm, and was given a suspended sentence, according to records cited by the outlet.

A psychological evaluation report has also been filed but its contents have not been disclosed.

His body was found three days after his guilty plea.

It’s unclear what brought the Luther, Oklahoma, resident to the border between Arkansas and Tennessee, but the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office does not believe foul play was involved, WREG reports.

Officials said no identification was found on Silas, but his mother, LaRena Darrow, claimed someone had his phone.

She said when she tried to call her, it was answered by a man she did not know.

“And I said, ‘This is my daughter’s profile, what are you doing on it? And he said, ‘I’m sorry Hailey doesn’t have a phone anymore,’” Darrow told the outlet.

“I don’t want to think about my baby being hurt like that and nobody being there to save him or being there to help him,” she said.

“I don’t know. I spoke to him on Thursday night and he sent me a couple [of] a picture of him on the bridge and he looks very happy.

“And he was going to sing karaoke and that was the last time I spoke to him,” added the grieving mother. “She is an amazing mother. My grandson misses such a wonderful person. He is like an angel.”

The incident including the cause of Silas’ death is still under investigation.
