YouTuber shared eerie social media post about death weeks before drowning in Hawaii

A 24-year-old YouTube filmmaker posted news of the death just weeks before he drowned while on a trip to Hawaii.

Carson Philbin, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was swept out to sea on the morning of Jan. 13 — a day after his birthday — while swimming with three friends in Ka’ū County, according to Hawai’i Island Police.

Three weeks earlier, the videographer urged his 6,000 subscribers to watch his video documenting his latest trip around the world.

“I had to carry a 40-pound gear bag 34 miles up a mountain but the cameraman never died,” Philbin wrote in a Dec. 23 Instagram post.

In a follow-up post the next week, Philbin reminisced about the journey he’s been on throughout the year, writing: “2024 is going to be even better.”

The trip to Ka’ū, Hawaii’s southernmost district, appears to be another one of Philbin’s trips centered around his 24th birthday, friends told the Charlotte Observer.

He and three friends jumped off the cliff at South Point into the water below, but were quickly overcome by “rough sea conditions,” police said.

Local bystanders rescued the three friends, but Philbin was swept 75 yards offshore before he disappeared below the surface.

His body was later found by local fishermen and the Hawaii Fire Department.

Officials are warning against diving in the South Point area, commonly known as the “Hoist,” after it claimed at least five lives in the past six years.

Philbin, who routinely climbs bridges and skydives in his YouTube videos, felt he knew his way around the area because his grandparents had a house nearby, friends said.

An autopsy will determine the official cause of death, but police believe Philbin died of drowning.
