Zaira Wasim completed her schooling from St. Paul, Sonwar, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir and Jammu Heritage School, Jammu & Kashmir. Since childhood, he was an excellent student. He scored 92% marks in 10th board exam. As of 2018, he pursued his secondary education from Heritage School, Jammu.
Before entering Bollywood, she had acted in two television commercials- “Microsoft Lumia” and “Tata Sky.” In 2016, she made her debut in Bollywood with the superhit Bollywood movie “Dangal” where she played the role of Indian sports girl Geeta Phogat.

Controversy
- In 2016, a photo of Zaira Wasim with a haircut went viral on the internet. He was criticized and beaten by radical Muslims for being un-Islamic by acting in Hindi films.
- In 2016, Zaira had a controversial meeting with the then Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti where Mufti had described Zaira as a role model for Kashmiri youth. Later, Zaira apologized on her social media account. However, deleted this apology after a while and added another open letter explaining everything. Moreover, the subsequent post was deleted again.

- In January 2017, former Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Vijay Goel tweeted that “This painting tells a similar story to @zairawasim. Pinjra torh kar hamari betiyan barhne lagi hai aage (Our daughters are coming out of their cages and moving forward ) More power to our girls!” In response, Zaira tweeted “I guess I have to disagree. I request you not to associate me with such an indecent image. The hijab woman is beautiful and free. Moreover, the story depicted through this painting is not very relevant to me .” After that, Goel replied that Zaira had misunderstood his tweet and that he appreciates her work and aims to prevent evil and patriarchal notions.
- On December 10, 2017, she was molested on a Vistara flight from Delhi to Mumbai by a 39-year-old man, Vikas Sachdeva, a senior executive of a media and entertainment company.
