Zoo calls on Maury Povich to help with mystery orangutan paternity

The father of a newborn orangutan at the Denver Zoo was a mystery to staff until they called in paternity test expert Maury Povich.

The veteran daytime talk show host, known for telling surprising guests on his show “You are not the father,” helped the zoo reveal the paternity of Siska, a 4-month-old Sumatran orangutan.

Since Siska was born in August, it is unclear whether her father Berani, 30, or Jaya, the 16-year-old zoo. posted on X.

On Monday, the zoo said it was time to settle the debate. “The DNA results are in, and we’re happy to share that we now know who Siska’s father is,” the zoo wrote on X. “Stay tuned for this special announcement from an additional special guest tomorrow.”

Cut to the next day, when the zoo shared a video of Povich donning a tux and turning on the drama while opening a manila envelope containing the test results.

“Right now, we want to thank the Denver zoo for everything they do, but this is … really important,” Povich said in the video.

“Speaking of the orangutan, 4-month-old Siska … Be brave, you ARE her father,” Povich exclaimed as the video cut to cheering zoo staff.

The zoo also replicated Povich’s performance, which ends after 31 years in 2022, by displaying a split screen of Berani and Jaya as the audience cheered.

After Siska was born Aug. 27 to first-time mom Eirina, it took a while for zookeepers to get close enough to pull a hair sample for a paternity test, spokesman Jake Kubié told the Denver Post.

The video cuts to zoo staff cheering as Povich reveals his father.

“When Siska was born, we didn’t know if it was Berani or Jaya, who were both potential partners,” said Kubié. “We couldn’t get close to the baby for several months to get a hair sample because we did everything we could to leave the mother and baby alone until we saw the opportunity.”

Kubié contacted Povich’s team and provided the big reveal, adding, “It turns out they’re really nice people and Maury was an amazing sport to do this for us.”

Siska’s birth was celebrated because the Sumatran orangutan is a critically endangered species.

Povich, 84, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award just days before lending his expertise to the zoo. His show “Maury” ended last year after 31 years.

Siska is the sixth orangutan at the Denver Zoo and her birth means a lot to the zoo because the Sumatran orangutan is an endangered species.

The baby orangutan was named after Dr. Fransiska Sulistyo, a well-known orangutan veterinarian, conservationist and researcher.
