12,000 migrants cross Southern border in a single day Tuesday — highest total ever: sources

The United States set a new record on Tuesday with more than 12,000 migrants crossing the southern border into the country, sources told Fox News.

More than 10,200 of them have been detained by Customs and Border Protection after illegally crossing into the country between ports of entry, according to network sources.

The total number of immigrants trying to enter the US will be higher when the number of people reporting to the Office of Field Operations for asylum appointments is booked through the CBP One application, which allows up to 1,450 people a day to be seen.

As of Wednesday morning, the agency had more than 22,000 immigrants in custody at various points across the border – pushing already strained border resources to breaking point.

The previous record for immigrants found in a single day was set at 10,000 in May as immigrants rushed into the country ahead of the expiration of Title 42, after which rules on how people will be processed are set to change.

However, the tough measures promised by Biden – that immigrants who entered the country illegally would be deported and deported and that certain criteria must be met before crossing the border – never materialized and thousands of immigrants still illegally flow across the border every day.

Border Patrol forces were so overwhelmed in three border states that one of the two international bridges at Eagle Pass, Texas was closed last week and the international crossing at Lukeville, Arizona was also closed.

The closure was done “to redirect personnel to assist the US Border Patrol by taking immigrants into custody,” CBP said.

Despite the chaos the federal Government expanded the CBP One application from 1,000 to 1,450 people who are allowed each day to surrender at the border and apply for permission to enter the US.

Because immigrants need appointments to be seen at some entry points, an immigration attorney recently told The Post it means more people cross illegally between entry points in remote areas or where the border is not reinforced.

Speaking about the border in California, Erika Pinheiro, executive director of migrant services at the legal aid company Al Otro, told The Post: “They would normally be able to walk to the port of entry and ask to be processed, but the port of entry is close to all asylum seekers except those who can make an appointment through the CBP One mobile application.

“So they are a bit forced [enter] between the points of entry if they want to seek asylum in the United States, which just creates a lot of chaos, both for the agencies and also for the organizations trying to respond.
