A 13-year-old honors student from Florida has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her mother to death as she slept next to her newborn daughter, authorities said.
Derek Rosa has been charged as a juvenile in the murder of his mother, 39-year-old Irina Garcia, but police in Hialeah have publicly identified him as he faces a felony charge of second-degree murder.
The shocking incident began around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, when Rosa called 911 to report that she “just killed her mom,” said Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department.
Officers raced to the family’s apartment on West 79th Street and found Garcia dead in her bedroom, just inches from a crib containing her 14-day-old daughter, who was unharmed, police said, according to a report by station WSVN.
Authorities said they believe Rosa waited until her mother fell asleep before slashing her neck several times.

Rosa was very polite and apologetic in her interactions with emergency dispatchers and responding officers, and “wasn’t what you would think or expect walking into that house or seeing that crime scene,” Rodriguez said.
The 13-year-old homicide suspect is described as a straight-A honor student enrolled in eighth grade at iMater Charter Middle/High School.
Rosa, her infant half-sister and their mother were the only three people in the apartment Thursday. The teenager’s stepfather, a truck driver, was in Georgia at the time.

Rosa has no known history of mental health problems and is said to be on good terms with her stepfather. There was no record of police responding to the family’s apartment before Thursday, officials said.

Neighbor Lazaro Rodriguez told Spanish-language station Local 10 that Rosa was “always with her mother” and seemed “calm.”
“He would help her carry packages or shopping bags,” said Lazaro Rodriguez. “I never saw anything abnormal with him. I don’t know what could happen.”

Investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the heinous matrix murder. Rodriguez said the teenager “didn’t give any information as to why he did what he did.”
“It’s something we’re all asking ourselves right now,” added the police spokesman.
Following his surrender to police, Rosa was taken to a juvenile detention center, and then to a hospital after he allegedly threatened to harm himself. The 13-year-old made an initial appearance in court on Friday.
