2-month-old baby, dozens of other passengers abandon burning houseboat in Utah lake: video

More than two dozen people – including a two-month-old baby – jumped into a Utah lake Wednesday after their houseboat caught fire.

Hair-raising footage a man handed the tiny baby off the doomed ship to a family member floating in the water as flames raged in the bow.

Plumes of black smoke billowed from the double-decker as other boaters raced across Lake Powell to help the family of 29 to safety.

“Jump! Jump!” one of the good Samaritans can be heard shouting. “Get the baby!”

Fortunately, all 29 boats were safely evacuated before the ship caught fire to the hull and sank to the bottom of the Glen Canyon National Park lake, 12 News reported.

The family had only been on board for 45 minutes when they heard what sounded like an explosion.

“We heard a big boom! Not knowing what it was, we went to investigate. We found the motor on the houseboat had exploded and caught fire,” Maddy Tolman told KSL.com.

“It was about five to 10 minutes between the explosion and when the boat was engulfed in flames.”

Everyone jumped from the burning boat and swam to another vessel that had been sailing in the Warm Creek area of the reservoir when the incident occurred.

Several children were among the survivors, including a two-month-old baby, an 8-year-old diabetic and three other toddlers.

“Fortunately no one was hospitalized. No one escaped with any injuries,” Tolman said.
