The Metropolitan Museum of Art has come under fire for its theme for the Met Gala to be held in May 2023.
While the museum set a solemn mood for the upcoming gala, observers were unhappy with the plan to celebrate the life and legacy of the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld. In fact, several people, including celebrities, took to their social media pages to speak out against the move, citing Lagerfeld’s “unacceptable” behavior towards women as their reason.
Jameela Jamil: Karl Lagerfeld Uses His Platform In A Hateful Way
According to Cosmopolitan, although Lagerfeld died in 2019 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, the fashion icon achieved great success in the fashion industry thanks to his extensive work with brands including Chanel, Fendi, Chloe, Balmain, and his eponymous brand.
To that end, the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition — “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” — will see about 150 pieces displayed alongside the late German star’s original sketches. At the same time, those who grace the event are expected to make appearances around the theme.
Unfortunately for Lagerfeld, his fashion legacy was tarnished when he said in 2009 that “nobody wants to see round women.” The creative director made matters worse by making several other offensive comments, including referring to actress Heidi Klum as “too heavy.”
He also called out the singer who called Adele “a little too fat” and claimed that Coco Chanel was not a “feminist” because she was “never ugly enough for that.” The allegations of sexual assault that plagued Lagerfeld’s life didn’t make the photographer’s life any easier.
So it was no surprise when “The Good Place” actress Jameela Jamil quickly uploaded a lengthy Instagram caption alongside Lagerfeld’s monochrome photo with the words “Nope”.

Once he realized how “greatly talented” the late German was, the champion of body positivity wrote that he “used his platform in a very hateful way, mostly against women, repeatedly and until the last years of his life, showed no remorse. , offered no reconciliation, no apology, no help to the group he attacked.”
The 36-year-old also wanted to know about “why should the world celebrate Lagerfeld” when “there are so many GREAT designers who aren’t bigoted white men?” He concluded that:
“We’re not fighting all this crap just to throw it all away because some white guy made some beautiful clothes for skinny people to like.”
Jamil’s sentiments were echoed by a Twitter user who write“As much as she contributed to the fashion industry, we shouldn’t be celebrating someone who made fat, racist and sexist comments throughout her career.”
Other people specified that while she looks forward to the annual Met Gala, she doesn’t appreciate those honoring a “racist, sexist, misogynistic, morbidly obese, islamophobic and antisemitic” man.
Fourth observer show that Coco Chanel is trending because the Museum “just announced the 2023 Met Gala theme, and it’s “Karl Lagerfeld,” who was Chanel’s designer for years and also has racist/neo-Nazi views. It’s disgusting.”
The last tweet got a response that expressed how “terrifying” it was to “see Lagerfeld’s praise when he died,” especially because of his racist, sexist and misogynistic comments and behavior.
Lagerfeld’s Preferences Have Created a ‘Special Touch’ For the 2023 Met Gala
MEGA
Last month, The Blast reported that Lagerfeld was not only a regular face at the gala but was also good friends with Anna Wintour, the gala’s emcee. His friendship with Wintour was so great that he threw his weight behind the turnout in 2015 with a Chanel-inspired theme.
Regarding the tribute to Lagerfeld’s achievements, Andrew Bolton — Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute — was surprised by the 2023 theme because “Karl never gets tired of telling me that fashion doesn’t belong in a museum.” The curator of the British museum also recalled that:
“When we worked on the Chanel show together, he was very generous in what he lent, but he had absolutely no interest in the show itself! He would say, ‘Fashion is not art — fashion belongs to the street, to women’s bodies, to bodies men.’
However, Bolton shared that the panel has added a special touch to cater to the artist’s preferences, where 150 of the selected looks will be displayed next to their original sketches by Lagerfeld himself, as we mentioned above.
