3 people injured, 1 critically, in US military aircraft crash in Australia: officials

Three US service members were taken to hospital, one with critical injuries, after a US plane crashed on an island north of Australia Sunday during a multinational military exercise, officials said.

One of the injured is in critical condition and the other two are in stable condition, rescue helicopter operator CareFlight said in a statement.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the three injured were Americans.

The seriously injured patient was a US Marine, the Australian Broadcasting Corp reported.

The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft crashed on Melville Island during Exercise Predator Run, involving the forces of the United States, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor, the Australian Department of Defense said.

The injured were flown by helicopter to the Royal Darwin Hospital about 60 miles south, CareFlight said.
