440-pound man convicted of slaughtering girlfriend over breadcrumbs in bed freed due to prison’s poor diet

A 440-pound Italian man convicted of brutally stabbing his girlfriend to death during an argument over breadcrumbs in bed has been released from prison after just one year of his sentence because of a court ruling that the high-calorie diet served at the facility could have killed him.

Dimitri Fricano, 35, from Biella, Italy, brutally butchered 25-year-old Erika Preti while the couple were on holiday in Sardinia in 2017, stabbing the woman 57 times after she reprimanded him for leaving too many crumbs on the bed of their hotel room.

Fricano hit 260 pounds in 2019 when he was sentenced to 30 years for murder — but due to a delay caused by COVID, he didn’t start serving his term until April 2022.

Over the past year, the inmate’s weight has ballooned to more than 440 pounds, prompting the Turin Supervisory Court to release Fricano from prison on medical grounds.

The court ruled last week that the mass prisoner could no longer be behind bars because he was “incompatible with the prison regime” due to his weight, which made it difficult for him to move without a wheelchair or crutches. He is also a chain smoker.

Dimitri Fricano, 35, left, was released from prison and placed under house arrest because an Italian court concluded that at 440 pounds, the prison’s high-calorie diet could kill him. Fricano’s imprisonment also endangered his life because prison officials were unable to provide him with the low-calorie diet he needed to lose weight, the judge said.

Fricano will serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest at his parents’ home near Milan, where he can have access to a healthy diet.

The move angered the victim’s family, who slammed the decision to release Fricano as “disgraceful.”

“No one will give me back my daughter. But for us, the pain is still too strong for him to be released so soon,” Preti’s father, Fabrizio Preti, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. “It was like receiving a stab to the heart.”

Fricano and Preti were on holiday in the town of San Teodoro on the island of Sardinia in June 2017 when they argued over his sloppy eating habits.

Fricano claims that Erika hit him with a paperweight, prompting him to grab a knife and plunge the knife into his body dozens of times.

At first, the man blamed the murder of his girlfriend on robbers, but eventually he admitted his guilt.

“He insulted me because of the bread and then hit me on the head, so I killed him,” Fricano was quoted as telling police.

Fricano’s defense attorney said she suffers from a number of medical conditions, including bulimic syndrome, anxiety depression, personality disorder and sleep apnea.

Doctors considered that Fricano was at high risk for cardiovascular disease and needed to follow a special diet that the prison in Turin could not provide.

The judge of the Turin Supervisory Court agreed, concluding that Fricano “needs assistance that cannot be provided in an institution.”
