They sure keep the wine flowing.
Local residents of a small Portuguese coastal town were shocked as rivers of red wine flowed through their streets on Sunday, after two tanks belonging to the Levira Distillery – carrying 600,000 gallons of the liquor – suddenly gave way.
Videos posted online showed red liquid rushing down a steep hill in the small town of São Lorenco de Bairro, home to about 2,000 residents.
The spill was so big that the escaped wine could have filled an Olympic-sized swimming pool – triggering an environmental alert.
Officials then act to try to stop the wine in its tracks, before it can actually turn the Certima River into wine.
The Anadia Fire Department contained the flood, and diverted it from the river, where it instead flowed into a nearby field, local media reported.

Firefighters said the basement of a house near the distillery was flooded with wine.
Levira Distillery has apologized for the incident, and said it dredged up the wine-soaked soil.
“We are fully responsible for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, asking the team to do so immediately,” he said in a statement.
“We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible.”
It added that the wine-soaked soil in the farm was taken to a special treatment plant.
