An 8-year-old New York boy was struck and killed by a school bus as he was on his way home from his yeshiva in Rockland County Monday afternoon, police said.
The boy, named in local reports as Mordechai Pinchos Spitzer, stepped in front of the school bus as it made its rounds around 6 p.m. in the village of New Square dropping off students, according to the Ramapo Police Department.
The boy died at the scene from his injuries.
Her father, Rabbi Yakov Yosef Spitzer, was the principal of the Skver girls’ school, The Yeshiva World news site reported.
The bus driver stayed at the scene and is said to be cooperating with police.
The area around the Jewish religious school in the 100 block of Clinton Lane remained off limits for hours as police collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

“It can be traumatic for the officers who respond, but we have a health team to support the officers who are here if they need anything, and often they will debrief after the fact, and that probably would have happened in this situation. because it was a small child,” Ramapo Police Lt. Blaine Howell told News 12 Hudson Valley.
The Ramapo Police Department’s accident reconstruction team is working on the case to determine what happened.
