Aaron Carter’s Twin Talks Brother’s Addiction And ‘Toxic’ Childhood

Angel Carter, twin sister of the late Aaron Carter, has reflected on her brother’s sudden passing and her family’s “painful” past.

Although Aaron’s circle was evident in several arrests for driving under the influence and drug possession, things took a turn for the worse when Leslie, his then 25-year-old sister who struggled with mental health issues, died of an overdose in 2012. Five years later in 2017, father they, Robert, died of a heart attack at the age of 65.

Angel Carter Has Linked Her Late Brother’s Problems To Their Abusive Childhood

In this week’s edition of PEOPLE, Angel tells how their father’s death accelerated Aaron’s descent into alcohol and drugs. In his words, “I always felt like it was the beginning of the end. Aaron was already in a bad place, but it was like a domino effect.”

After their father’s death, Aaron took the step of checking himself into a rehabilitation facility, where medical professionals identified schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder in his diagnoses.

Throughout her brother’s ordeal years ago, Angel could only watch in agony as he streamed disturbing videos online. The clip depicts him in front of a gun and inhaling compressed gas from an air barrel as he shares shocking stories about how his family and others allegedly plotted to kill him.

“I just kept waiting for him to block it but he never did. He really wants to be happy. He really fought to the end, but he had too many problems to solve. He will be a person we don’t know anymore. I don’t think he recognized himself,” Angel recalled.

A few months after his death, their mother, Jane Schneck, did the strangest thing by posting images of her late son’s death scene, insisting that she had received death threats. In addition, he claimed authorities dismissed his concerns a month before the official verdict, which attributed his death to suffocation to drug use and gas inhalation.

Digging deeper into their history, Angel — who has since stopped talking to Jane for such an invasion of Aaron’s privacy — shared, “Our childhood was filled with emotional abuse, dysfunction and addiction.”

Taking steps to break what she calls the “generational” cycle, Angel has joined forces with children’s mental health organization On Our Sleeves. Through the organization, “the stigma surrounding mental health and not being able to talk to children about their feelings” will be broken. In his words:

“It is easier to raise a strong child than to fix a broken adult. Something positive has to come from all of this. I refuse to let Aaron die in vain.”

The last time Angel spoke publicly about her twin brother was in December 2022 when she expressed her sadness at losing the singer just a month before their 35th birthday. At the time, The Blast reported that he had posted a tribute to Instagram that began:

“I want to start by sharing how much I appreciate all the birthday wishes. Even though today is very difficult, I am overwhelmed by your love and support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The Florida-born star later recalled how she felt “broken and confused” as part of the pain of losing Leslie more than ten years ago. Although the experience made him question his own existence, he relived it when Aaron died in November 2022. Describing more about the couple’s death, the 35-year-old wrote:

“When we lost Leslie, I was blindsided and shocked. With Aaron, however, we’ve tried everything. In fact, I spoke to him two days before he died, and I pleaded, again, for him to let us help. Little did I know that would be the last time I would hear his voice. And now, I sit here on our birthday, trying to navigate this unimaginable loss due to untreated mental illness and the addiction it leads to.”

After declaring that the day the “I’m All About You” hitmaker died was the “worst day” of his life, Angel continued:

“I’ve loved him since we were born… it feels like a piece of my soul is gone. Yet, despite all this pain, his passing has lit a fire within me. I feel a calling and a responsibility to help other families and continue the conversation to further break down the stigma surrounding mental illness.”
