On September 12, Ralph made history by becoming the second black actor to win an Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The first black woman to win the award was Jackee Harry for her performance as Sandra Clark in “227.”
While accepting his award, Ralph gave a great speech that received a standing ovation from the audience. He initially sang a song, singing, “I’m an endangered species, but I don’t sing the song of the victim. I am a woman, I am an artist. And I know where my voice is.”
Ralph said, “To anyone who has ever, ever dreamed and thought your dreams would never, never, never come true. I’m here to tell you that this is what believing looks like. This is what effort looks like. Never give up on you, because if you get Quinta Brunson in your corner, if you get a husband like me in your corner, if you get kids like me in your corner, and if you have friends like everyone who voted me, cheer for me, love me—thank you!”
