The late country singer, born Toby Keith Covel, died on Monday after a two-and-a-half-year battle with stomach cancer.

In the accompanying caption, he wrote, “You are the strongest man I have ever known. A fighter. A true titan of your industry. My guiding star. My coach. My hero. The embodiment of the American Spirit. You are a man of strength, greatness, and his talent can only be surpassed by his ability to be a father and a husband.”
Covel noted that while the 62-year-old’s “impression is forever stamped on the world and millions of people,” no one knows him “as I do.” He called his father his “biggest champion” and “guiding light” in his “darkest times” before adding:
“The best mentor a man could ask for. You have a spirit bigger than a mountain and it shines through every lyric and chord.
The Tequila Chulos co-owner admitted that Keith left him “strength and faith to lean on” through his music and praised his late father for doing things his way, which he “never apologized for.”
“The only thing I really want in life is to make you proud. I promise I will continue to make you proud.
It’s not goodbye forever; that’s just goodbye for now. I love you, cowboy,” Covel concluded, along with a cowboy and a white heart emoji.
The entrepreneur’s words resonated with some Instagram users, and they immediately posted their reactions in the comments section.
“A wonderful honor. My deepest condolences. Prayers for the family. RIP Big Dawg Daddy,” one declared, as another claimed, “This is an amazing tribute, Stelen. I know he’s proud,” and a third asserted, “Truly a unique man. Praying for you and your family. Love you man.”
A fourth fan also stated, “Sending love to you and your family at this time Stelen. Even us strangers could see that the only thing Toby loved more than his music was your family.”
Another loved one who has announced Keith’s death is his close friend, Brett Favre. As The Blast reported, Favre revealed that the “I Love This Bar” singer chose to stop chemotherapy in the months before his death.
In the words of a former football quarterback, “[Keith] deal with it with grace and faith and family and survive cancer as best you can. [But] I think in the end he was just tired. He said that to me when we were talking; he said, ‘Brett… whatever happens, I’m okay with it.’ He said, ‘I quit chemo, and it probably did more damage to me than the cancer.'”
Farve wrapped up, saying, “And he said, ‘I just wish I hadn’t stopped too late, but… I’m thankful I got a chance to play some shows. I spent it.’”
Keith’s Love For His Wife & Family Was Evident During The Interview
In the days before his death, Keith praised his wife, Tricia Lucus, for providing unwavering support throughout his cancer treatment journey after he received his diagnosis in 2021. He said:
“He used to be a trouper. She is the best nurse. The first time we went to Houston, to the hospital, he walked in, and he just took control and said, ‘We got this. Let’s go.’ So he was like, ‘We’re going to get this, and don’t worry about it.’”

In addition to talking about Lucus, the Billboard Music Award winner previously talked about her children in a 2010 interview, where she shared:
“Everyone in the family is good. I was raised by good parents, and I have wonderful children. They don’t have any problems at all — none. They all grew up with me being successful, but they weren’t attached to that part of the business.”
