Normally, you’d have to be a celebrity, top fashion stylist or First Lady if you wanted to raid the closet of vintage clothing dealer Shannon Hoey.
But for the next two weeks, the deep-pocketed public will have the chance to use Hoey’s dream items that have been worn by Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker and Michelle Obama. Sotheby’s will auction the thread online as part of Fashion Icons, running until September 14. Three Hoey items, among seven others, are estimated to fetch as much as $160,000.
Hoey, a longtime lover of classic clothing, opened her Chelsea showroom, New York Vintage, in 2000. The place was a hit. “Sarah was one of my early clients,” Hoey told The Post of Parker, in an exclusive interview. “He came for himself, and then the design team from ‘Sex and the City’ came too.”
Since then, Hoey has provided vintage costumes for films including “Wolf of Wall Street,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Men in Black III.” While she’s proud to see her clothes on the big screen, when it comes to her collection’s clothes, there’s a bigger mission at work. “

We have a special, one-of-a-kind section, which is otherwise unattainable,” he said. “They had a first life when they first came out. Now, through use in movies and on photo shoots, they get a second life. For me, that’s what’s satisfying. With the auction, other people will enjoy clothes that mean a lot to me. “
Here’s the back story of Hoey’s discovery that’s about to hit the auction block.

Dating back to the 1800s, this exotic headdress — featuring a taxidermied bird’s head — has become a superstar auction item after gaining “Sex and the City” fame.
The fascinator divided fashion when Parker, as Carrie Bradshaw, first wore it to her wedding—which wasn’t—in the 2008 film.
Parker previously told Vogue that, while she and the wardrobe team loved the piece, she didn’t think director Michael Patrick King would pull it off. So the actress just didn’t tell her and showed up wearing it.
“And when I came on set, he was like, ‘Why is there a bird on your head?’ And I was like, ‘Look at that bird. You will make the same decision.’” he said. “Of course, you know he was up against it, and he won a lot, for good reason … but we won.”
Hoey recalls: “Once the show aired, the piece was iconic. I had a lot of requests from people who just wanted to see the bird hat.”

He acquired the piece at an auction of collectibles that had been deaccessioned from the museum, and it landed on film after Parker and the wardrobe crew visited Hoey’s showroom.
“We have become a revolving source for [the ‘Sex and the City’ universe],” said Hoey. “Sarah loves mixing contemporary with vintage and fell in love with bird hats. She decided it was the perfect finish to her look … It was one of several dresses from the show that she wore but didn’t keep.”
But Parker wore it again this year, for the spinoff series “And Just Like That.”
“After the show aired,” said Hoey, “I was contacted by a Saudi princess. He offered me $100,000 for the hat. But it wasn’t for sale then … Now it’s in good company, in the auction alongside the clothes worn by Princess Di.”

When Hoey’s phone lit up with an unbelievable caller ID — the White House — in 2010, “I thought it was spam,” he said.
“But it was actually Michelle Obama’s stylist, recommended to me by one of my clients.”
They are looking for a special outfit for the First Lady to wear in conjunction with the holiday special “Christmas in Washington,” featuring the Obamas. Hoey’s black lace vintage number, designed by American cosmetologist Norman Norell, circa 1950s, is in demand.

“I can only describe seeing Michelle Obama wearing that dress as surreal,” Hoey said. “It was a moment that solidified my position in the world of vintage fashion. This is the first time the First Lady has worn vintage and it opens the door for others to start wearing their beloved clothes.”
While Hoey usually earns his money by renting out vintage clothes, an exception was made for Obama and he lent them out for free. “Him wearing it is an honor.”

For the February 2023 cover of Vanity Fair, Madonna needed a look just right to match the headline: Icon Issue.
Having worked with the singer before, Hoey knows the drill.
“Madonna’s stylist called; we talked about the vision and I looked at the reference image,” Hoey said. “Among several different ideas, one was inspired by ‘Like a Virgin’ and the veil was a special request.”

About 100 items, including this early 20th century Brussels lace veil. “It was about seven feet long and I bought it at auction,” Hoey said. “The length is what caught my eye.”
As to why Madge chose it, Hoey said, “The veil is important in portraying the image of the virgin. It’s layered with a Dolce and Gabbana piece… My clothes have been in a lot of magazines, but this is extraordinary because it’s Madonna.”
