During an interview in 2022, the 34-year-old said he was “very prepared” when it came to “Abbott Elementary” compared to his concerns with different projects. Recalling his past emotions, he said:

“I’ve been a pilot where I was like, ‘Oh my God. If this happens, I don’t know what I will do. I will hate my life. I don’t want to move to Vancouver.’ This show is not that special. It would be my nightmare if the pilot left.”

“Whereas with Abbott, it’s like, ‘If this doesn’t happen, I don’t know what to give to the world because this is the best I can do.’ I can see us winning awards. I can see us becoming very popular,” Brunson claimed.

When asked to explain how she intends to deal with the pressure of “highlighting the institutional problems of the American education system” as a black woman in Hollywood, the 34-year-old said:

“On the one hand, I am very happy to represent something very positive to the public. It makes me feel humble and grateful. I try not to live in it too much because I think it’s a trap. I think perfection is a trap, and I think branding is a trap.”

Brunson further explained that he is aware that people’s perspectives cannot be controlled and insisted that he will not try to control them. “I really just want to make a good TV show,” he said.
