ABC Backs Out Of ‘Backstreet Boys’ Christmas Special Amid Rape Scandal

The festive season is looking a bit bleak for Nick Carter and his Backstreet Boys band members.

The band’s Christmas special, “A Very Backstreet Holiday,” was canceled after allegations that Carter raped an autistic teenage girl during the band’s 2001 tour surfaced. The Los Angeles show is scheduled to air next week as part of ABC’s Wednesday, December 14 schedule.

The special is set to feature Carter, along with his band members – AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, and Howie Dorough – celebrating the Christmas season while performing some of the biggest songs from their tenth album, “A Very Backstreet Christmas.”

Seth Rogen, Nikki Glaser, Rob Riggle, Meghan Trainor, Ron Funches, and Atsuko Okatsuka are also on the list of scheduled appearances. News of ABC canceling the special was confirmed by Variety, following a woman identified as Shannon “Shay” Ruth who filed a sexual battery lawsuit alleging Carter raped and infected her with HPV (human papillomavirus infection) when she was 17 years old.

The Blast shared that the now 39-year-old did not provide details during a December 8 press conference with his attorney, held at the Los Angeles Beverly Hilton hotel. Claiming that the attack took place in February 2001 after the boy band’s concert in Tacoma, Washington State, he said:

“The past 21 years have been filled with pain, confusion, frustration, shame, and self-harm as a direct result of Nick Carter raping me. Even though I am autistic and live with cerebral palsy, I believe that nothing has influenced me more or made a more lasting impact on my life than what Nick Carter did and said to me.”

Ruth claims that Carter invited her to hang out with him on his tour bus after he spent time in the autograph line. The singer then took her to the bathroom, demanding that the teenager perform oral sex on her.

After that, the “8 Simple Rules” star allegedly continued to sexually assault Ruth in bed. When she tried to get off the tour bus, Carter stopped her, then grabbed her arm, where he left bruises, and yelled at her.

According to court documents, Ruth claims that she was a virgin before the fateful encounter and that she contracted HPV after it happened. Ruth explained that she took so long to come forward with her story because she was afraid of going to jail if she told what allegedly happened between her and the now 42-year-old.

Fortunately, the plaintiffs are taking a fresh look at the matter, citing the ultimate goal of “stopping” the “Dancing With the Stars” regulars from “attacking more teenagers and women.” “Just because Nick Carter is a celebrity does not mean he is exempt from his crimes. I am a survivor and will remain,” Ruth concluded her speech.

Carter has since denied the allegations.
