The Swedish actor known for his roles in iconic action films such as “Rocky IV” and “The Expendables” recently revealed that he has been battling cancer for the past eight years.

In an emotional interview on the show “In Depth with Graham Besinger”, per Daily Mail, Lundgren shared that he was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015, but it went away after he went into remission. It reappeared in 2020, and this time he was told that he had little chance to live as doctors gave him less than three years to live.

“In 2020, I returned to Sweden and had acid reflux. I didn’t know what it was, so I did an MRI,” he recalled of how he found out about the cancer’s recurrence.

In the interview, Lundgren speculated that steroid use for bodybuilding may have caused him to develop cancer.

Lundgren, now 65, started using steroids in the 1980s when he was a bodybuilder and starred in several popular action movies. He admits that he was not fully aware of the risks involved at the time and was only focused on building the perfect physique for his films.

“I tried steroids in the 80s, 90s. I don’t know if that has anything to do with cancer; of course, it surprised me that it might have something to do with it,” shared the “Universal Soldier” star. “I thought about it; you always think you’ve made a mistake. I think there may be a connection between testosterone therapy and cancer.”

He added, “I used steroids when I was young, and at a time of maybe ten years. It depends on the kind of film I’m doing.”
