“This is the second year Modelo has done this to bring authenticity to a holiday that is largely misunderstood by 60% or more of Americans. They really don’t know what’s behind it. We’re not trying to educate people, we’re not trying to sell history lessons honestly,” Camil exclusively told The Blast.
“We’re just trying to bring a little more authenticity to what the holiday really means to me as a Mexican and to Modelo, as a Mexican beer. I believe Modelo is the number one imported beer in the US and number two overall, so it’s great that such a powerful entity from Mexico would make this effort to bring some authenticity to the holiday.”
Camil explained that some people think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day and she wants everyone to understand that that’s not true.
“It’s not Mexican Independence Day,” he said. “Imagine going to St. Patrick’s Day or the 4th of July and have no idea why you’re there. It doesn’t make sense. We should have at least a basic cultural knowledge of what is behind certain things that we do.”

The campaign focuses on a festival in Los Angeles, as well as an online market, now through May 2, filled with authentic Mexican products made by Mexican and Mexican American artists.
“You’ll be able to visit Modelo’s Instagram page and you’ll be able to buy from local vendors all over the US but especially benefit Mexican artists,” Camil said.
On May 7, Camil will participate in the “Cinco Museum” at the Placita Olvera Cinco de Mayo Festival in Los Angeles. The event will be educational and engaging and will highlight the history of Cinco de Mayo.
“I’m going to be the curator of the ‘Cinco Museum,’ not because I know much about art, but we’re just going to get on with it. We will showcase the beautiful works of Mexican artists,” he told The Blast.
“Cinco de Mayo is an important but often misunderstood holiday, so Modelo and I help fans celebrate it authentically and gain a better understanding of the day’s origins. Los Angeles is associated with the beginning of the Cinco de Mayo celebration, so we enhance the city’s rich cultural history at the ‘Cinco Museum’ and pay tribute to artists who beautifully showcase the vibrancy of Mexican heritage through their crafts.”
Jaime Camil Has Been Acting For Almost 30 Years

Camil got her start in the entertainment business when she was living in Mexico with her parents. With her artistic mother, she knew she would probably follow in her footsteps.
“My father is a businessman and he wants me to continue in business,” he said. “My mother was a songwriter and singer in Brazil, so of course, when you get your artistic vein through the umbilical cord, it’s very hard not to have that in your system. So, I started in Mexico 27, 30 years ago.”
The actor started in radio and then moved on to doing television shows. He later did telenovelas, movies and musical theater.
Some of her notable roles have included parts in “Jane the Virgin,” “Schmigadoon, and voiceovers in “Coco,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” “Duck Tales” and more. Camil says she chooses her characters based on the script.
“I am a fan of the script. I love reading scripts,” he exclusively told The Blast. “If the script is solid and good and the character is five lines or 100 pages, I don’t care. If the character is born out of the story and if I like the story as a whole, I agree.”

It was the script that drew her to her role in “Jane the Virgin.” At the same time he was offered the role, he was also offered a role on a major network but ultimately chose the script he liked best.
“I was very, very lucky and lucky to get three straight offers. “Two of them, out of the three scripts, that are more creative and have more storytelling are ‘Jane the Virgin’ so far,” he said. “The other offer was for an ABC show, like a major network, and the script wasn’t that good to be honest. Of course, my manager was like, no, you have to go to ABC, the bigger network, but the project wasn’t very good. ‘Jane the Virgin’ is great.”
Currently, Camil is busy with “Schmigadoon” and several upcoming projects. His film “Snag” with Paramount premieres on digital platforms on April 28, and he just signed a documentary deal as an executive producer and narrator with Roku. Additionally, he will be a special guest in the third season of the Apple TV+ show, “Acapulco.”
The Cinco de Mayo event takes place on historic Olvera Street in Los Angeles on May 7th from 12 to 6 pm PDT. Visit the website for more information.
Fans outside of the Los Angeles area can celebrate the holiday authentically by visiting Modelo’s Instagram page to shop handmade items from small Mexican American businesses through May 7.
