Actor Adam Driver had something to say about recent reports that there was chaos on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s new film, “Megalopolis.”
Coppola’s passion project has been decades in the making. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker is reportedly financing the project himself, though it sounds like trouble may have occurred on set.
On January 9, The Hollywood Reporter published an article featuring a quote from an anonymous source describing “chaos” on set. Although the film was currently shooting in Atlanta, the 83-year-old director reportedly cut the entire visual effects team in December.
Last week, the production designer and the crew’s supervising art director reportedly quit, leaving many to wonder if Coppola’s vision will ever come to fruition. However, the “Star Wars” alum, who appeared as Kylo Ren and a redeemed Ben Solo in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, wants fans to be sure that the movie is going ahead as scheduled.

In an interview with Deadline the next day, Driver said, “I wanted to briefly respond to The Hollywood Reporter article that was published on Monday, January 9,” adding, “Everything is great here! Not sure what set you’re talking about! I don’t recognize that one! I’ve been on chaotic sets and this one is far from it.
The two-time Academy Award-nominated actor had nothing but praise for Coppola, saying, “The environment that Francis has created, is one of focus and inspiration. So far, we’ve been on schedule, making our days, and honestly, it’s been one of the best filming experiences I’ve ever had.”

“Our crew is fast and inventive, our costume department is on point, the cast is incredible and prepared, and Francis is one of the most insightful and caring people to work with,” he continued.
“I was very proud to make this film with him, and them, and although I didn’t interview everyone, I can confidently say that was the general attitude on set.”
Driver Feels Coppola’s Risk On ‘Megalopolis’ Is ‘Commendable’

Although Pemandu admits there are some problems with the staff, he does not believe it will affect the production of the film. Coppola himself told Deadline that they plan to finish on schedule and finish filming by spring 2023.
“Yes, it’s true that the art department resigned and VFX was let go,” admitted Pemandu. “Not all departments find unity in the film and instead of suffering and making decisions that leave a lasting impression on the film, people quit, were fired or parted ways. It’s unfortunate when it happens, but this production isn’t out of pocket compared to other productions; especially so that it deserves an article about us descending into chaos. The characterization is not accurate.”

“Nobody signed up for this film expecting the process to be conventional. We expect the opposite in an effort to create something unique,” added Pemandu.
“The only madness I’ve noticed is that more productions aren’t allowed to be creatively wild and experimentally focused, precisely because someone else is paying for it. It was an effort and a risk by Francis that I think should be commended, not openly misinterpreted as problematic.”
Francis Ford Coppola: ‘I’ve never worked on a film where I was so happy with the actors’

For his part, Coppola also had nothing to say about his cast. In addition to the “Girls” alum, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, and Dustin Hoffman will also star.
“I’ve never worked on a movie where I’ve been so happy with the cast,” Coppola told Deadline. “I am very happy with the performance and we are on schedule. This report never mentions who this source is. To them, I say, ha, ha, just wait and see. Because this is a beautiful film and especially because the actors are amazing.”

“I have never had the pleasure of working with an actor who is so diligent and so ready to go in search of the unconventional, to find hidden solutions. It was a pleasure to work with this cast and the photography was everything I could have hoped for,” he continued.
“The newspaper is great. So if we’re on schedule, and I love the cast and the look is great, I don’t know what we’re talking about here.”
