Adam Driver Says ‘Silence’ Was More ‘Physically Demanding’ Than ‘65’

Actor Adam Driver believes that his role in “Silence” is more “physically demanding” than the action-packed thriller “65.”

The “Star Wars” alum has taken on some physically demanding roles in the past and admits that his “physicality” plays a big part in his new dinosaur-filled blockbuster.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the “Marriage Story” actor looked back on some of his most challenging roles leading up to the release of “65.” Driver plays Commander Mills, who crashes on prehistoric Earth with fellow survivor Koa, played by Ariana Greenblatt.

“I would still say Silence was the most physically challenging role because there was a lot of weight loss,” he said. “That’s a long thing to sustain for four months, but 65 is definitely really physical.”

“One of the things in the movie is because [Mills and Koa] cannot communicate, physicality becomes something very important,” he explained. “So it became important to do all those things, because the environment is another character in the film.”

This is Pemandu’s first collaboration with “A Quiet Place” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Wood. “65” also marks the directorial debut of both. Although Driver has worked with legendary directors such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, he does not view his work with “experienced” directors any differently.

“Actually, what makes the seasoned directors you’re talking about so great is that they don’t get set. The expectation is that Scorsese or Coppola will be like, ‘Do this,’ but that’s the opposite of what they are,” explained Driver. “They couldn’t be more cooperative or open. And they, of course, have huge cinematic references, and they have a control over the language of cinema that young directors don’t have. That’s for sure, and it comes from a time when there were more people in the room thinking about it.”

“But 65 is a unique experience. I certainly have never worked with him [Beck and Woods] before, but it’s good,” he continued. “So I can’t think of anything [other advantages to young directors] because experienced directors I’ve worked with also approach it as if they’re trying to find it again. They have that kind of humility, and they go into projects without making a set path.

Ariana Greenblatt Calls Driver ‘Very Committed’ And ‘Intense’ On Set

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-star Ariana Greenblatt, who previously played a young Gamora in “Avengers: Infinity War,” admitted that Adam Driver can be “fierce” because of his commitment to the role. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t get the married father of two to break character once again.

“Yes, he is very committed and he is strong, but my main goal when working with him is to try to discourage him as much as possible,” he explained. “I was like, ‘Come on, man. You can’t be serious all this time.’ So I gave him cookies and a blanket, and I tried to be too nice just to crack him up a little. And he did! So we have our sweet moments together, and we also share the same dry, sarcastic sense of humor. So it worked out really well.”

Although “65” was not Adam Driver’s most physically demanding role, Greenblatt admitted that it was “100 percent” one of the most difficult roles of his career.

“I learned more than I have ever learned from this film. I learned how to deal with extreme weather and climate conditions. I learned how to deal with many emotionally and physically exhausting scenes,” he explained. “So this movie has really taught me a lot about the whole process, and I’m very grateful for that. But it is very challenging at times. I was like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I’m cold. I’m blah, blah, blah.’ But I persevered, and I did. So I’m very happy about it.

“65” hits theaters on March 10. The film’s synopsis reads: “After a major crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth — 65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance to save, Mills and the only survivor, Koa, must cross an unknown terrain full of dangerous prehistoric creatures.”
