Alaskan couple skates over surreal crystal clear ‘ice window’ that formed over lake

An Alaskan couple can be seen gliding on a surreal clear “window of ice” that has formed over the lake during a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Luc Mehl and Sarah Mehl Himstad were skating on Lake Rabbit near Anchorage in late October while the ice was translucent due to the so-called “ice window”.

The window anomaly forms when cold, dry weather causes the water to become clear, allowing people to see down to the bottom of the lake.

The condition usually only lasts about a week, Mehl told Reuters.

“And given that it took ten years, you know, maybe longer, for those terms to be laid out this year, I think it might be another decade before we see something like that again,” he told the outlet.

The Alaska native said he’s never seen that effect happen in the last 12 years he’s been surfing the lake.

The only imperfections are the white streaks made by skaters’ blades as they go through the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

However, Mehl cautioned people to take precautions before skating because some people “passed out the rest of the week.”

Skating instructors recommend that anyone who skates invest in an ice pick to help them if they break while skating.
