Alec Baldwin And ‘Rust’ Producers Release New Film ‘Supercell’

Actor Alec Baldwin and the producers of “Rust” have released their new movie “Supercell” even though the actor is facing a criminal trial.

The fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on October 21, 2021, and the two counts of involuntary manslaughter the actress was charged with in January 2023 may have disrupted the release of the new film, which quietly opens March 17 in theaters and on demand. .

The disaster film was released the weekend of March 17 – 19 in several independent theaters and video on demand; however, Baldwin has not done any press for the film. She shared an Instagram post to mark the release, reminding followers that it was one of the last projects filmed by the late actress Anne Heche.

As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the film was released in the US by Saban Films, which grabbed the domestic rights to the film before Hutchins died in October 2021. Although Baldwin’s star power will carry audiences before the fatal shooting, Comscore data reveals that “Supercell” only opened in twenty cinemas nationwide.

Comscore data revealed that the disaster film earned $6,840 between the weekend of March 17 – 19, which was completely unexpected given the limited amount of advertising that went into the film. Although it won’t make big numbers at the box office, it jumped to number seven on the iTunes movie rental chart.

What Is A ‘Supercell’ Movie?

The film was co-written and directed by Herbert James Winterstern and marked his film debut. The film tells the story of a teenager named William, played by Daniel Diemer, who runs away from home. William is caught up in the same storm that claimed the life of his father, a famous storm chaser.

William teams up with his father’s old friend Roy, played by Skeet Ulrich, and a greedy travel company owner named Zane, who happens to be played by Baldwin. As William tries to learn more about his father, a “Supercell” storm begins to approach them. Anne Heche plays William’s mother who gives up her career as a scientist after her husband’s death.

Although Baldwin has been tight-lipped about the release of his new film, he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2021 about the impact they were able to make on a limited budget. “I haven’t run across a field trying to catch the sun to shoot in a long time,” he said at the time.

“They don’t have money for a lot of effects, this is not a Spielberg production. They had to find a way to simulate it and do it at a low cost, and they did,” he continued. “We’re going to say ‘action’ and get out of this van and oh my god, they’re blowing this stuff at us like you wouldn’t believe.”

As of this writing, “Supercell” has a 50% score from critics but a 93% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Although Anne Heche and Alec Baldwin’s performances were praised by critics, most were critical of the film itself.

“Chasing the storm in this mid-budget feature never really amped up the excitement as much as it needed to. And human drama (however well-intentioned) isn’t strong enough to get us through it,” writes Keith Garlington of Keith & the Movies.

“The melodramatic tone of the epic leaves the film without nuance, which means that there is almost no sense of realism in either emotion or action. So while it’s familiar and watchable, it’s also contrived and sentimental,” writes Rich Cline of Shadows on the Wall.

Steven Prokopy of Third Coast Review wrote, “When Baldwin and Heche appear on screen, they clearly mark themselves as professionals on set, which at least gives us something to lock onto for a while. Besides, Supercell is a train wreck that I’m happy to catch up with him.”

However, there are more than a few fans who appreciate the film. Ryan B. commented, “Really fun movie! When it comes to Storm Chasing, the only real movie we have is Twister (Into the Storm was a disappointment), so this was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. From a film critic’s point of view, I can see this product lacking some cinematic points. As the easy-going movie scrub that I am, I have no regrets paying $7 to see this movie.”

Another viewer named Manoj M. added, “An excellent tornado chase movie like Twister, but more driven by Amblin’s character and heart! Love it!” Maryela P. also enjoyed the movie, writing, “This movie is good! The right amount of action. It reminds me of twister as far as suspense goes. I love how real it is until you feel like you are standing right under a tornado. Overall, a superbly made film!”
