Actor Alec Baldwin is facing backlash for trying to get his wife Hilaria Baldwin one million followers on Instagram.
The Boston native was born on January 6 and the “30 Rock” actor has a very special gift: trying to get his Instagram account to one million followers. He did, but many fans wondered why it was so important to him, considering he made five separate video posts asking fans to follow his account.
Alec Baldwin Faces Backlash For Getting 1 Million Followers For Hilaria Baldwin: ‘Is That Really Important In Life?’
A few days ago, the “Beetlejuice” actor told fans “Tomorrow is my favorite person’s birthday. Can I ask you for a favor?” He then posted a video on Instagram explaining that he wanted to get his wife’s Instagram account to one million followers.
Some of their famous friends were more than happy to comply. Frances Fisher wrote “Sweet request! I already follow your beauty [account] so I will call my friends to follow him!” Some of their friends also started tagging their friends to give Hilaria a follow.
However, the pushback started almost immediately. “What is your problem? I adore you. Now I think you’re out of your mind,” commented one fan. “This is an uncomfortable request. I have no reason to follow him,” wrote another follower. “What does it matter about a million followers? 1 billion followers? It’s all just celebrity ego nonsense,” said a third fan.
Fans Think Hilaria’s Birthday ‘Gift’ Should Mean More Than Empty Followers

Since one can simply buy followers for any social media platform, others question why Alec didn’t come up with a more meaningful way to honor his wife’s birthday.
“I would honor a request to help a charity to honor his birthday instead of caring about his wife’s insta follower count! Aren’t there more pressing matters in the world that you could be dealing with?” asked a fan.
“I already follow him but wouldn’t it mean more to him if we donate 5 dollars to the Maaaaybe Animal Rescue Charity. Or maaaybe feeding the homeless? I’m not sure how I feel about this screaming selfishness. I would happily ask for a small donation to feed Fur baby or any baby for that matter,” wrote another follower.
Alec Baldwin Drags His Daughter Carmen Into The Mix
The couple married in 2012 and welcomed their first child, Carmen, in 2013. Their daughter is now nine years old. “Follow my mom on Instagram. Please and thank you,” Carmen begged in a video filmed by Alec. Many fans assumed that their daughter was begging people to follow her mother on Instagram.
“This is a bit strange. Is having more Instagram followers what she wants for her birthday? It seems that someone in tune with humanity would know that this will not bring him peace or self-respect,” commented one fan.
“How about asking to follow a charity that is meaningful to him to raise awareness? That’s great,” said another follower. “Stop following you and your wife now. I thought your first begging video was bad enough but using your daughter to ask for followers??? What example set him?!” asked another fan.
Alec Creates ‘Last Push’ To Try To Get More Followers
In another video that Alec captioned as “last push,” Alec pleaded with his followers to follow his wife in the minute-long clip.
“Honestly, Alec, he doesn’t deserve it. He wants to control his ig by not allowing comments & you expect us to follow him so he gets attention. No, Thank you. You actually motivated me to unfollow him, which is exactly what I did & saw others do too. Yes, you can’t have cake and eat it too,” commented a fan.
Many fans said they also unfollowed the account, prompting Alec to explain that he also took his wife out to dinner for her birthday in a separate video.
In the video, she says that they are “getting closer” and continues asking people to follow her account.

In the last photo Alec captioned “Really…” he decided to stop posting the video and instead shared a handwritten note that read “Thank you so much to everyone who helped get my wife to 1 million followers.”
“Does that really matter in life?” asked a fan. “I wonder why that’s so important,” another follower agreed. “Sad because this is considered an achievement,” said another user. “A million followers is a big deal on a birthday?? Give me a break,” shared another.
“Hope he’s living a better life now – we’re all praying he gets to 2 million,” joked another follower. Maybe that will be her goal for her 40th birthday next year!
