In a conversation with a television media house, Ali Akbar publicly stated that he had left his religion from Islam to Hinduism after the majority of smiling reactions to the post of Bipan Rawat’s death were from Islamist social media users. He said,
Unfortunately, 99% (slanderous posts) are from my religion. So I decided to leave religion. I am ashamed to be a Muslim after many hateful and offensive tweets about General Bipin Rawat were seen. All Muslims are not jihadists but all jihadists are Muslims. I can’t change them but I can change myself so I left my religion, there are so many leaders in Islam but they don’t speak a single word against them. They will fight over Waqf board appointments but say nothing against anti-Indian men.”

Director
Ali Akbar started working as a director in 1988 with the film Mamalakalkkappurathu (meaning beyond the mountains). In 2002, he started writing songs for Malayalam films such as Bamboo Boys and Senior Mandrake. In 2020, a film titled ‘1921: Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ directed by Ali Akbar was a hit. The film is based on the real incident of the ‘Malabar Rebellion’ which took place in North Kerala in 1921. The specialty of this film is that it was made from crowdfunding.
Ali Akbar has his own production company ‘Mama Dharma’ which he established in August 2020. This production house was inaugurated by Swami Chidanandapuri who is the head of Kolathur Advaithasramam, an ashram in Kerala.
Politics
Ali Akbar entered politics in 2014 when he contested as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate and contested the elections from Koduvally constituency. He was unsuccessful in this election and switched to the Bhartiya Janata Party nomination. At the same time, he was elected as a committee member when he contested from Kozhikode Corporation in the municipal corporation elections. This post was left by Ali Akbar in October 2021 due to some disagreements with party members.

- Before his conversion, Ali Akbar posted a video on his Facebook account and slammed those who smiled at the death of General Bipin Rawat. Soon after, his account was suspended due to the many hateful comments he received on his videos. Enraged, he opened a new account and declared on it that he left his religion because he was blocked on Facebook when he raised his voice against wrongdoing. He wrote,
Within five minutes of speaking out against those who installed the emoji, the account was blocked. I couldn’t accept it, I couldn’t agree with it, so I left my religion. Neither I nor my family have any religion anymore. That’s the decision. That is my reply to those who posted thousands of smiley emoticons against India.”
He further stated that those who celebrate the death of military personnel must be punished. He stated,
The state should identify those who smile at the death of CDS and punish them.
