Alleged Gilgo Beach killer’s wife may have been in town during murder, attorney claims

Attorneys for the families of two Gilgo Beach victims are questioning whether the wife of accused serial killer Rex Heuermann has been in town longer than investigators think — saying she may have been there during one of the killings.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has said that Heuermann’s estranged wife Asa Ellerup was out of town during each of the killings but attorney John Ray questioned that conclusion Tuesday night during an event at the University of St. John in Queens.

Ray, who is representing the families of Shannan Gilbert and Jessica Taylor, claims he spoke with an Atlantic City hotel manager who said Ellerup and her children arrived later than investigators thought — meaning they would have been in town during at least one of the murders. .

Ellerup’s attorney, Bob Macedonio, denied Ray’s claims, telling Fox News that if Tierney was wrong about Ellerup, the entire case against Heuermann would fall apart.

“When, when conducting any investigation into any criminal matter, do they do that at the front of the bail application?” he said. “Very, very rare. … If he’s wrong, it casts reasonable doubt on his whole case.”

A former federal prosecutor with no connection to the case told Fox that it makes no sense for the DA to make an argument he’s not sure about.

“The DA’s statement will be a potential problem if it is wrong,” Neama Rahmani told the outlet. “But why would the DA dispute something they’re not sure about?”

Heuermann, 60, has been charged in the “Gilgo Four” murders of sex workers whose bodies were found on Gilgo Beach in 2010.

The bodies of Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, and Megan Waterman, 22, were found wrapped in burlap on the beach within days of each other between December 2010 and April 2011.

Heuermann, a New York City architect and married father of two, was arrested last July in connection with the high-profile case after he was linked to three of the women through DNA found on discarded pizza.

His arrest came after former NYPD chief Rodney Harrison, who was the Suffolk County police commissioner at the time, reopened the case in January 2022.

Harrison initiated a special Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force in February 2022 which quickly identified Heuermann as a suspect.

Heuermann has been held without bail since his arrest.
