However, the “Good Times” actor, who is known as “America’s Dad,” has denied that he is a victim of elder abuse and said that he does not know why his daughter launched the fundraiser.

Last week, John Amos’ daughter, Shannon Amos, created a GoFundMe for the 83-year-old actor, which has raised more than $12,000 dollars from 308 donations. It’s still a long way from his $500,000 goal. She claimed that her father was “fighting for his life” in the ICU and had been a victim of elder abuse.
The “Roots” actor has been hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee, since May, although the actor denies that he is a victim of elder abuse. Shortly after the GoFundMe was launched, Amos told TMZ that she wasn’t sure why her daughter started the fundraiser and insisted that she wasn’t abused.
However, the Colorado sheriff’s office is investigating allegations of elder abuse involving the actor. On Friday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation sent out a news release on behalf of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident.

“The men and women of the Colorado Custer County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery for Mr. John Amos,” the press release read. “His publicist has released information that he is currently a patient at a hospital in Tennessee. Mr. Amos has been a beloved member of our community for many years. He has also been a loyal supporter of our community and this sheriff’s office.”
“We take criminal allegations seriously. We can confirm that an allegation has been made to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office that Mr. Amos could be the victim of a crime,” the release continued, putting “could be” in bold. “We are thoroughly investigating the allegations and have consulted with our partners at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Human Services. We have also been in contact with Mr Amos and his lawyer.”
“As with any potential criminal investigation, we are unable to provide any additional comment on the case or the investigation,” the statement added. “We have received questions from media around the country and this will be our statement until we are in a position to release additional information.”

In an Instagram post and GoFundMe page, Shannon claimed that “On May 14th, I would receive a heartbreaking call: from my father, sharing that he was hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee, in excruciating pain,” adding, “Despite coming out from the country, I arranged for help to reach him. The ICU revealed his life was hanging by a thread.”
“The past two weeks have shattered our world. My father, a victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation,” he continued. “We are working with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and local authorities, determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. Legal help is essential to ensure they are prosecuted and protect my father’s future. His home, naked, needs a safe space for him to return to.”

“This cruel reality baffles us, but we hold on to hope. Every donation will go to the trust for my father’s care, legal fees and aftercare,” he added. “Help us win this battle, send love, and keep hope alive for the day we can dance together again. Although Shannon has disabled comments on her Instagram posts, her GoFundMe page is full of fans offering small donations to help the actress. One fan who donated $20 wrote, “Growing up, John made me laugh. It breaks my heart that people can be so cruel. To work your whole life and then have someone take what you have is so wrong on so many levels. I will pray for John and hope that those who stole from him and abused him are brought to justice. I will pray for John.”
