In an interview with the San Francisco Bay Times ahead of the show’s premiere, Amy admitted that getting to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses was the “heavy focus” of the new tournament.
“With almost every game of Jeopardy!, if you lose, you’re done. This is a different scenario, like a sports league season. You keep playing. If you lose, you will get up and take it to the next match,” he explained. “That will be interesting. How do you adjust throughout the season? How do you change your game when you’re up against James Holzhauer, against Matt Amodio or Sam Buttrey? Does that change the way you play the game? That is something that Jeopardy! didn’t have the opportunity to explore before.”
Amy goes on to admit that popular music is her weakest category, simply because there is so much to learn. However, he has been practicing. He was listening to the radio with his wife and trying to recognize songs by popular artists, such as Harry Styles and The Weeknd.

Last January, Amy went on a 40 game winning streak, the second longest in the show’s history. The only person ahead of him is host Ken Jennings, who won 74 games in 2004 when the late Alex Trebek was still hosting the show.
Although she made headlines during her record-breaking feat, Amy revealed that she leads a relatively normal life. He’s married since winning the show and has adopted another cat named Rue. However, when he is at home, he just has a “regular night” with his family.
“I’ll be recognized in Oakland and I’ll be asked for selfies, but people let me live my life and do karaoke or whatever I do. But I spend more of my time flying around the country and doing things that are not like my own life,” he explained. “But when that doesn’t happen, we hang out and watch Netflix. We’re four episodes away from our Jane the Virgin rewatch.”

Many fans wondered what anecdote Amy might have shared about herself during the first commercial break that fans hadn’t heard before; however, the former software engineer assured fans that there are still stories they haven’t heard yet.
“I have a more complex and interesting life than would necessarily fit into the 20-second anecdote of all the viewers. Like most transpeople, when you realize you’re trans, you realize that you’ve been following a bunch of arbitrary rules all your life, so you question all the rules of life, whether it’s about sex and drugs but all the norms of behavior,” he explained. “I have interesting life with a lot of killer anecdotes that I can’t tell on Jeopardy! because they’re not for all audiences.”

For those who just started auditioning for the show, Amy said, “I auditioned for 13 years before I finally got the call. That’s how it is. They have 400 slots a year. The fact that you didn’t get called back isn’t that you weren’t good enough. Keep trying!”
For participants, Amy said, “The number one piece of advice I always give is to practice removing every distraction from your mind and letting go of the results. Chances are 2-in-3 you’ll play one episode and lose and that’s it.”
“Go there determined not to worry about that, your appearance, or the camera. Of course; live in the moment. What matters is the next question,” he added. “There aren’t many opportunities you get in life where that amount of focus is required.”
“Danger! Masters” premiered on ABC on May 8 and will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
