In just a few days, the Netflix streaming platform will launch another original film, “Blonde,” which centers on the personal life of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

In an interview with Others magazine published Tuesday, the Cuban-Spanish actress revealed that she made a pilgrimage to Monroe’s marble tomb in Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles, shortly before she starred as the deceased screen idol in the Netflix original “Blonde.”

“We got this big card, and everyone in the crew wrote a message on it,” de Armas shared, recalling how other crew members got in on the act. “Then we went to the cemetery and placed it on his grave. We asked permission in a way.”

The actor added that the weight of what they were trying to achieve with the film was a major factor behind the emotional act of visiting Monroe’s grave.

He added, “Everyone felt a huge responsibility, and we were very aware of the side of the story we were going to tell – the story of Norma Jeane, the person behind this character, Marilyn Monroe. Who was she really?”

In a press conference at the film’s premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, de Armas revealed some unlikely events while they were filming “Blonde,” which seemed to imply that the late actress gave them the green light to proceed with production. .

“I really believe that he is very close to us. He is with us,” said de Armas. “I think he’s happy. He’ll even throw things off the wall sometimes and get mad if he doesn’t like something. Maybe this sounds very mystical, but it’s true. We all feel it.”

However, even though de Armas gave herself to the role, she still found it challenging to pull off Monroe’s voice for the film.

“I tried!” de Armas said, per Insider. “It only took me nine months to train the dialect, and practice, and some [automated dialogue replacement] session. It was a great torture, very exhausting. My brain is fried.”

Fortunately for the star, he has the full support of the film’s director Andrew Dominik. In a chat with reporters at the Venice Film Festival, she shared how she knew de Armas was the right person to portray Monroe despite her strong Spanish accent.

The long and difficult process of bringing “Blonde” to reality began when Dominik began writing the script in 2008. Several candidates for the role of Monroe were speculated for the part, including Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts, until de Armas was finally chosen.

The plot focuses on Monroe’s different personal and professional lives, delving deeply into her love issues, alleged abuse of power and exploitation, her drug use, and many other sordid details.

Parts of the film were shot in black and white to accurately depict important events in Monroe’s life. Along with using different aspect ratios, other areas are set in color. Also starring in the film are Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Xavier Samuel, and Julianne Nicholson.

“Blonde” premieres on Netflix on September 28.
