Angela Bassett has paid tribute to the late singer Tina Turner, who she played in the biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It.”
The two have shared a close friendship since Bassett starred in the film, which earned the actress an Oscar nomination. In her tribute, Bassett shared Turner’s final words to her and praised the “Proud Mary” singer for her impact on the music industry.
In addition to Bassett, Turner, who died Wednesday of an undisclosed illness, was mourned by several other A-listers on social media.

“His last words to me — to me — were, ‘You never imitated me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed it to the world,'” Basset said, pointing out that Turner was happy with his performance.
Bassett said he will forever cherish “those words for the rest of his life,” adding that he was “honored” to know the singer.
The actress also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to tell Turner’s story with actor Lawrence Fishbourne, who plays the singer’s husband, Ike.

Much of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” focuses primarily on Turner’s exponential rise in the music industry during the nineties and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her jealous husband, Ike.
The film, which was only possible because Turner decided to own his pain and trauma, has had an impact on many, a fact Turner acknowledged in his tribute to the singer.

The actor also asserted that Turner’s “commitment to stay the course of his life, no matter the sacrifices, and his determination to carve out a space” for himself in the music industry” will continue to be a template for others.
He added, “Tina Turner is showing others living in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion and freedom should look like.”

On Wednesday, it was announced on Turner’s official Instagram account that he had died at the age of 83.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner,” read the post, which included a monochrome photo of the singer.
It continued, “With his music and boundless zest for life, he captivated millions of fans around the world and inspired future stars. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who left us all his best work: his music. Our sincere condolences to his family.”

Turner battled a long-term illness that ultimately led to his death, although it remains unknown what the illness was. However, he admitted in March that kidney disease had put his health in “grave danger.”
“My kidneys are a victim of me not realizing that my high blood pressure should be treated with conventional medicine,” he said in a post on Instagram.
Turner was diagnosed with hypertension in 1978 but left the health issue unattended, which led to a stroke in 2009. However, he refused to take conventional medicine but realized too late that the consequences of his decision were irreversible.
The “Proud Mary” singer is survived by her second husband, Erwin Bach, 67, and two of her four children.
