Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell’s widower, Eldridge Toney, is still dealing with her absence two months after her tragic death.
The media personality, best known as Mama June’s eldest daughter, lost her battle with stage 4 adrenal carcinoma in December 2023. Her death left a huge hole in the hearts of her loved ones, with her husband unable to sleep in their marital bedroom.

Toney recently opened up about her emotional state in the wake of Cardwell’s death, revealing she had just found the emotional strength to begin her healing journey. The first step is to place his late wife’s belongings after leaving them untouched since her death.

“I wasn’t in the bedroom because everything was the way he left it,” she said. “The last night we were in the bedroom was actually the day before he decided to go into hospice.”
“All that feeling of being bored with that room there, especially with all the stuff just like when we were there …,” Toney continued, admitting that it was challenging to enter their bedroom. In his words:
“It’s hard to get down in the room, and I think it’s like a major thing that, like, gives me anxiety about the house, but it’s in the same sense.”
Toney understood that he could not move forward without sorting out Cardwell’s belongings and had to begin the emotional process. She said: “We have two wardrobes in the bedroom, and I fold all her clothes and put them in the bin and lots of other things that are important to her. I put her wedding dress on, and I closed the door.”
He continued: “I have access to it, but it’s no longer the way he left it. So yes, I have everything in the back cupboard with the door closed, but I have left some things, you know, he said that I wanted to avoid .”
Despite his willingness to reorganize the couple’s home, Toney admits he can’t get a good night’s rest in their bedroom. “I will work towards that,” he explained, adding:
“It’s a process, but some days I’ll go in there and lie down. I wasn’t going to sleep, but I just spent a little time there. I will continue to spend more time in the room so that when I decide to sleep there, it is not so right in front of me.”
Before this heart-to-heart interview with PEOPLE, Toney previously told the outlet how Cardwell’s death has affected his life. “It kept hitting me again,” she said of her grief at the time. “It’s going to be a lot different.”
Toney admits that the thought of “returning to our house without Anna and without the girls” was hard to accept. Also, he admitted that waking up to find Cardwell gone was painful. “It’s going to be very lonely,” he added. “It’s getting harder.”

Cardwell and Toney secretly tied the knot nine months before his death, as their marriage certificate reveals. Their marriage records show the couple said their vows on March 4, 2023, in Wilkinson County, Georgia.
Cardwell reportedly pushed for the ceremony with Toney after learning of his cancer diagnosis in January 2023. He intends to get married while he feels strong enough to attend the event.
As per her wishes, she and Toney tied the knot in March, the same month she reportedly began chemotherapy. The wedding ceremony took place in an intimate manner, attended by the couple’s closest family members.
A camera crew filming for her family’s WE TV reality show, “Mama June: From Not to Hot,” also attended the event. Before his death, Cardwell did not welcome any children with Toney; however, he has two daughters from a previous relationship.
Toney wasn’t the only loved one struggling with Carwell’s tragic passing. Her daughters, Kaitlyn and Kylee, are reportedly also struggling with their mother’s death. In December, sources claimed the family was considering seeking therapy to help the girls through the grieving process.
According to insiders, Kaitlyn, who is now in the care of her grandmother, Mama June, has been actively supporting her mother as she battles cancer. The little girl made sure she took her medicine and provided constant companionship.
