Actress Anna Marie Tendler was hospitalized before her divorce from comedian John Mulaney due to “severe mental health breakdowns.”
Mulaney filed for divorce in May 2021 after spending several weeks in rehab. Just a week later, he revealed that he was dating actress Olivia Munn, and the new couple welcomed their first child together in December 2021.

In an essay published Wednesday for Elle called “Saying Goodbye To Petunia,” the artist described the breakdown of her mental health before her divorce.
While Mulaney was in recovery, Tendler revealed that he and his late French bulldog, Petunia, moved to Connecticut in December 2020 “due to my severe mental health breakdown and what appeared to be the impending end of my marriage.”
“My mental health is completely dependent on my dog. When I was hospitalized for depression, self-harm and severe suicidal ideation in the first two weeks of 2021, the doctor asked me to make a list of the reasons I live,” he explained. “Petunia is one -the only thing on the list.”

After detailing a long list of Petunia’s medical conditions, Tendler admitted that “Petunia’s life only lasted as long as it did because I was in a very special financial situation.” However, when Petunia’s heart problems worsened, she would definitely have to be sidelined.
“He breathed his last while hugging me. Even after life left her body, I sat with her, held her, and continued to talk to her,” Tendler wrote. “I told her how much I loved her. I told her how grateful I was for her love and friendship.”
He wrapped up his essay, writing, “I promised him that I was fine and I would be fine without him; crushed, lonely, but okay. I thank him for staying with me—for taking care of me—until I was strong enough to survive without him.”
Tendler Freezes Her Eggs After John Mulaney Divorce

As The Blast previously reported, Anna Marie Tendler began the process of freezing her eggs after the couple finalized their divorce in January 2022. The former couple first tied the knot in 2014 and have no children together.
In an Instagram post announcing her gallery opening in January, Tendler shared an artist statement about motherhood that further explained her decision to freeze her eggs.
“The concept of Motherhood is so ingrained in us that even if it’s something we don’t want, we fail to trust our gut. I didn’t really want children, but at thirty-six I froze my eggs because I was afraid I might change my mind,” she wrote.
“At first glance, my two works may appear to tell the story of a woman longing for motherhood, but I urge the viewer to consider the patriarchal conditioning that leads to this interpretation,” she continued. “Why does a woman dressed in black and placed in an empty twin bed room signal loss? Why are we so quick to assume he is sad?”
“Perhaps she is Lilith, Adam’s first wife, who refused to submit to her husband, left the Garden of Eden to become a very angry figure, stealing men’s sperm and eating their babies in the dark of night,” he speculated.
John Mulaney Shares Son With Actress Olivia Munn

Although the former couple never had children together, Mulaney welcomed a son with actress Olivia Munn a month before the divorce was finalized.
At the time, Tendler said it was “surreal” to see her ex-husband have a child with another woman before they were officially divorced, in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“I had a lot of bad days and average days,” he continued. “I wouldn’t say I had a good day until the summer.”

“Everything that has happened is shocking and I think really surreal,” he continued. “In a way, I guess, it can only go up from here, because I’m reaching the depths where I can go.”
“There were things I never thought about before because it was just a closed door,” he explained. “So now it doesn’t feel like a closed door, it’s something I think about a lot.”
He added that he “always [held] partnership above having children,” said, “I feel blessed that I can stand on the precipice of all these new things, that I might experience, and who knows how it will turn out? And there’s definitely something interesting about that.”
