The two-time Oscar winner went on to recall his “state of desperation, of despair” some 50 years ago, when he fell in love with the bottle.
“I just had to admit one day that there was something wrong with me,” he said. “I didn’t realize it was some kind of condition — a mental, physical, emotional condition called alcoholism or addiction. And I’m not an expert on drugs — I’m not an expert on anything. I do not know anything. Except I’ve found a life where nobody bullies me.”

Regrettably admitting that he was “very hard to work with” because he was usually “hungry,” Hopkins claimed that the change in his life was brought about by a lawyer he received from a woman at an AA meeting in December 1975.
Per Many people, Hopkins recalled the woman asking, “Why don’t you just believe in God?” and thence, he said that the desire to drink was taken from him, “never to return.”
“I believe that we are capable of many things,” Hopkins said at the time. “From my own life, I still can’t believe that my life is what it is because I should have died drunk in Wales or something.”

The Welsh actor continues to share uplifting messages with those struggling and suffering from one form of addiction or another.
“I want to say to all the young people who are bullied, take note – be proud of yourself,” Hopkins said. “Don’t listen to them. Don’t let yourself be put down. Depression is a part of life, sometimes [as is] concern. Life is hard.”
The veteran actor went on to add that if they need help with any addiction or problem, they’d better talk to someone.
“Talk to someone you respect, whether it’s a counselor or go to a 12-step program,” advises Hopkins. “There are 12-step programs all over the world, every city. … A twelve-step program that can help you identify who you are. It costs nothing, but it will give you a new life.”
“So wherever you are, get help. Don’t be shy,” urged the actor. “Be proud of yourself, whatever you do. Don’t let anyone bring you down. If you’re going to be mad, be mad at them. … Celebrate yourself.”
