Anthony Hopkins Reflects On His Experience In The MCU: ‘It’s Pointless Acting’

Veteran actor Anthony Hopkins revealed he was not satisfied with his experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The 85-year-old starred in the MCU in three “Thor” films, playing Odin, the father of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.

In a recent interview, he described the experience as “pointless acting” and slammed the continued use of green screens. Hopkins currently stars in the romance-themed series “Those About to Die.” He will also appear in “One Life” and “Freud’s Last Session.”

In a recent interview with New YorkersHopkins, who stars as Odin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened up about his experience on set.

The veteran actor shared the information as part of the publication’s recent op-ed about how the MCU is finally “swallowing” Hollywood and has shifted the focus of fans from the actors to the superhero characters they play.

Hopkins first starred in the role in 2011’s “Thor,” which earned $449.3 million worldwide upon its release. He reprized the character in two more sequels, 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World” and 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.”

While playing the role benefited Hopkins financially and career-wise, the actor stated that he was not satisfied with the role.

He said, per Daily Mail, “They put me in armor; they poked their beards at me. Sit on the couch, scream a little. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, there’s no point in acting.”

Despite his doubts, Hopkins credits the MCU role for reviving his career, as he was considering retirement when he was approached to join the franchise.

In the 2021 Marvel book, The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universehe revealed how “Thor” director Kenneth Branagh never let him give up and motivated him all the way.

“Branagh gave me back meat to work with. I’ll let it go, really. But you see, [Branagh] will not allow you to do so,” reads an excerpt from the book.

It goes on, per Daily Mail, “Working with Ken is an injection of new energy into my life. He seems to have the same infectious quality on everyone in the crew. His spirit, his attitude, is so positive that he brings out the best in everyone.”

Four years after his last appearance in the MCU, Hopkins won his second Oscar in Florian Zeller’s psychological drama “The Father.” He stars in the film as Anthony, an older adult living with dementia.

Although the actor described his MCU role as a “pointless act,” he referred to his part in “The Father” as an easy act in an interview after his Oscar win.

“For me to play ‘The Father’ was easy because he was my age – no acting,” he said AARP.

At the time, he also advised young actors not to “do too much” for their roles.

He said, “Just make it easy. It’s like a martial art — Bruce Lee said, ‘Become water,’ surrendering to gravity to throw your opponent over your shoulder. If you play a big tragic moment, don’t play it loud. Once you tense up, you’re stuck because there’s no flow to it.”

Last year, Hopkins reprized his role as “The Father” in “The Son,” which Zeller also directed.

He currently stars in the Peacock series, “Those About To Die,” playing the Roman Emperor Vespasian, who ruled from 69 to 79 AD, per Daily Mail.

The new series, which is an adaptation of Daniel P. Mannix’s 1958 non-fiction book of the same name, portrays Hopkins’ character as “despised by Patricians who vie for position in the Empire and want to replace the heir to the throne the first chance they get.”

Recently, the first photos from the set hit social media, with Hopkins seen wearing a white and gold robe and crown in one of the pictures. Another shot featured Hopkins posing with colleagues dressed in Roman garb.

In addition to her role in “Those About To Die,” Hopkins will star in “One Life” and “Freud’s Last Session.”
