Arizona man dies on Grand Canyon trail, marking 10th park death this year

A 65-year-old Arizona man was found dead on a popular Grand Canyon National Park hiking trail Thursday, marking the park’s 10th death this year, officials said.

James Handschy, of Oracle, Arizona, was pronounced dead on the Bright Angel Trail.

He tried to hike from the South Rim to the river and back, the National Park Service said in a statement.

The Arizona Trail, which is about 18 miles round trip, is considered the park’s most popular hike but descends into a canyon, making the return trip much more difficult.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing by the NPS and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

The Grand Canyon – the nation’s deadliest national park – records an average of 10 to 20 deaths a year, according to reports. Of the 10 so far this year, four have been related hikes, three of which are on the Bright Angel Trail.
