The cast of the hit CW show, “Arrow,” held a mini-reunion in support of striking industry workers, organized by the show’s executive producer and creator, Marc Guggenheim. But the show’s star, Stephen Amell, who has recently come under fire for his anti-strike comments, was conspicuously absent.

Guggenheim addressed Amell’s absence and stated that the actor’s comments about the strike were “misinterpreted.” He also highlighted Amell’s support for both SAG and the WGA.

On Friday, members of the CW’s “Arrow” cast gathered at Warner Bros. Burbank to raise funds for industry crew members through the Union Solidarity Coalition during Hollywood’s first two union walkouts since 1960.

Hosted by executive producer Marc Guggenheim, the event included the show’s stars Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland and more. However, missing in action was Stephen Amell, who recently took heat for his comments on assault.

Guggenheim revealed to Hollywood Reporter he had spoken to Amell the night before and emphasized that “what he said [about the strike] has been misunderstood.”

“He was in New York for the Colin Donnell play yesterday and was picketing Warner Bros. Discovery this morning. It’s not my place to talk about other unions and their strikes but Stephen supports SAG because he is a member of the WGA,” Guggenheim said.

He added, “I’m glad he’s picketing; I’m disappointed he wasn’t there to join us today, but he sent Beth and Wendy an encouraging message. He has our back, and we have his back.”

Amell’s differing views on the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike sparked discussion and divided opinion. The actor’s stance differed from the majority of his fellow actors, with over 97.91% supporting the strike.

While speaking at GalaxyCon in Raleigh, North Carolina, to promote his series “Heels,” Amell expressed concern about the effectiveness of the strike.

He acknowledged his support for the union but voiced his disapproval of the strike as a bargaining tactic. “I support my union, I support, and I support them, but I don’t support the strike, I don’t. I think it’s a reductive negotiating tactic, and I find it all very frustrating,” he explained.

He described the approach as narrow-minded, especially when it comes to shows like “Heels,” adding, “I think the thinking that goes into a show like the one I have (Heels), which aired last night, I think is short-sighted. .”

After facing backlash over his remarks about the SAG-AFTRA strike, Amell addressed the issue on Instagram, aiming to clarify his stance. In a detailed post, the 42-year-old actor sought to avoid misunderstandings and provide context for his comments.

He reiterated his unconditional support for the union and explained that his phrase “I don’t support the strike” was a vague choice of words that contradicted his true feelings. “Of course I don’t like strikes. No one does. But we have to do what we have to do,” he added.

He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, expressed his frustration, and recognized the difficulties facing leadership. “Our leadership has a very complicated job and I am grateful for everything they do,” he explained. “I understand why we drew attention, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t emotionally frustrating on many levels for everyone involved.”

Amell also dissected his other quotes, admitting in one instance the expression was unclear.

He ended his lengthy post by reaffirming his commitment to stand with the union, despite the criticism. “I chose to stand with my union. When you see me on the picket line please don’t whip any hard fruit,” he concluded.

Following his explanatory post, Amell faced criticism in the comments section, with one individual urging him to quit the union, suggesting, “No one likes to go on strike, so apologize, stop promoting your work or leave the union. It’s easy.”

Another commenter questioned his priorities, stating, “So you’re not supporting the strike because you think celebrating your performance is more important than the majority of your colleagues getting paid fairly?”

Other users encouraged Amell to take responsibility for his words. “Buddy you say what you say. You have broken the strike rule by promoting your show. Own it and don’t act like you didn’t mean what it said,” they wrote.

Instead, some defended his perspective, advising him to “never apologize to people.” Another commenter tried to clarify Amell’s point, explaining, “I guess you can’t support your union while hoping you work? He just said he hoped it wouldn’t have to go on strike but he still supported it. How difficult is this to understand?”
