Ashley Judd Blames Grief For Fractured Leg ‘Freak Accident’

Actress Ashley Judd and singer Wynonna Judd lost their mother Naomi Judd earlier this year after she took her own life after a long battle with depression.

Both Wynonna and Ashley have been open about the grief they’ve been dealing with after their mother’s death in recent months, but it seems not all of their pain is emotional.

Ashley blamed her grief-induced “carelessness” for the “freak accident” that left her with a broken leg.

On Wednesday, the “Double Jeopardy” actor took part in the Open Mind lecture and conversation series hosted by the Friends of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA (via The Hollywood Reporter.)

He told UCLA professor Dr. Jonathan Flint about the injuries he sustained over the summer, which came two years after he fell while hiking in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In February 2021, he tripped over a fallen tree and broke his leg in four places, leading to a dramatic rescue and months of recovery.

Fortunately, Ashley tells Flint that the recent fracture she suffered over the summer has “healed in two months, in pieces,” adding, “That’s the way it is.”

“Awkwardness is associated with grief, and there were other people in our family, after mom died, who fell down the stairs and had accidents, and that’s what happened to me,” she said. “It really allowed me to grieve. It really allowed me to stop what I was doing at the time and grieve.”

Ashley also thanked her friends and family for checking on her and offering her a support system in her grief.

“On the day my beloved mother died of suicide, I had so many people to reach out to. There were five women who were with me within seconds of me sharing the tragic news with them, and they were my chosen sisters,” Ashley explained. “I just stared overnight. I had one of the 2 mornings I woke up overnight, and I reflected on the first days after his death and how there was always someone with me in my house.”

The “High Crime” actor is still working through the grief with the lessons he’s been working on with his “wisdom teacher” for the past few months.

“I just spent time with my wisdom teacher today, and there’s a lot going on in my life right now. We are approaching [six] the anniversary of my mom leaving and my sister on tour,” he said referring to his sister, Wynonna. “I saw two concerts this weekend, which brought a lot of deep pain, both joy and sadness.”

The “Ruby in Paradise” actress, now 54, also admitted that she has put on weight since her mother’s death, but described it as a “temporary condition” that will improve in time.

“I’ve put on a bit of weight and I’m sure people talk about it but I don’t care because I know it’s temporary and the weight will come off when it’s supposed to. It’s not my business what people think about me,” he said.
