Dozens of University of Wisconsin-Madison students plunged into a lake near campus when a pier they were riding on collapsed beneath them, according to officials and dramatic footage.
The Union Terrace Memorial Pier on Lake Mendota collapsed into the lake, sending about 60 to 80 students into the water on Labor Day Monday afternoon, UW-Madison police said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Current video shows the pier collapsing in one place before other parts also fall down like a line of dominoes.
“I turned to this girl, and we were like, ‘Oh my God. Did that really happen?'” student Gabrielle Willbrandt told WMTV. The freshman was one of many standing on the pier when it came down.
At least 25 people suffered minor injuries, although only one person was taken to the hospital, police said, according to the Journal Sentinel.
Five people were treated at the scene, while the others did not require any treatment.
The pier was supposed to be moved for the season on Tuesday, authorities said.
“Me and my friend who was swimming with me heard a big bang, and the whole dock collapsed,” student Nicole Mitchell told WISC.
“There were dozens and dozens of students on it, just tanning or jumping in the lake or talking to their friends and suddenly everything was gone.”
Students swam back to shore with their phones in the air to keep them from getting wet, Mitchell said.
An investigation into the collapse is ongoing.
