An Israeli airstrike on Damascus airport has reportedly killed nearly a dozen senior Iranian military officers, which an expert told Fox News Digital will prove Israel’s ability to maintain a multifaceted defense in the region.
“While there is no independent confirmation of the name or rank of the Guard Corps, the IRGC has long viewed Syria as a critical regional hub for projecting power into the Eastern Mediterranean and connecting its proxy constellation called the ‘Axis of Resistance,'” Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation Defense of Democracy, said.
“It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Guard Corps elite are operating there, especially in the midst of a regional war, which they are directing far from their own land,” he added.
“Similarly, if the strike is confirmed independently, it will be more proof that Israel is able to contain and prevent elements of the Resistance Axis in other geographies while fighting to defeat Hamas in Gaza,” Taleblu stressed.
Syrian media claim that Israel has targeted sites in southern Syria and near Damascus in a wave aimed at disrupting Iran’s operations in the country.
A report from The Jerusalem Post claimed the attack killed 11 leaders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at the airport on Thursday night.
Targeted IRGC leadership also reportedly included Nur Rashid, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards in eastern Syria, who suffered only minor injuries in the attack.

The group has reportedly visited the country to meet with high-ranking representatives from Syria.
Israel has reportedly launched strikes against IRGC personnel in Damascus over the past week: Iranian leaders claimed that one such strike on Monday killed senior IRGC commander Sayyed Razi Mousavi, who was responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Iran and Syria.
Pro-regime media citing an IRGC official denied 11 of its senior members were killed in a report published late Friday in Iran.
Iranian state media interrupted programming to announce Mousavi’s death and described him as one of the oldest advisers to the IRGC in Syria.
Although the IDF has not commented on the recent attacks in Syria, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, speaking on Friday during a visit to the Ramat David air base and stated that “The IAF’s operations in all arenas are impressive. It is right that the ‘thunder’ of our aircraft will drown out unnecessary discussions, and allow the IDF to carry out its mission quietly and safely.”

Israel has not shied away from Iranian aggression, which Tehran rejects in the region through its various proxy groups, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett this week in a Wall Street Journal op-ed said that Israel has even retaliated inside Iran for a terrorist attack carried out in 2022, saying that he told his security chief during his administration that the goal was “to avoid, if reasonably possible, a local battle” with Iranian proxies.
“As prime minister, I made another decision on Iran,” Bennett wrote.
“I ordered Israeli security forces to make Tehran pay for its decision to sponsor terrorism.”
“Enough impunity,” he insisted.

“After Iran launched two failed UAV attacks on Israel in February 2022, Israel destroyed UAV bases on Iranian soil.”
“In March 2022, an Iranian terrorist unit tried to kill Israeli tourists in Turkey and failed. “Shortly after that, the commander of the unit was killed in the middle of Tehran,” he added.
