Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 animated film, posted a video to Instagram stating if she will reprise her role for the upcoming live-action film.

“When I was cast as Moana at the age of 14, it changed my life and started my career,” the now 22-year-old actress said in the video. “In this live-action retelling, I will not reprise that role. I believe it is very important that the casting accurately represents the character and the story we want to tell,” he explained.

Cravalho said she was excited to pass the baton, stating, “I can’t wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s brave spirit, undeniable intelligence and emotional strength. I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific people, culture and community that helped inspire her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representations to come. Although Cravalho will not be reprising her role as Moana, she will still be involved with the project as she is an executive producer on the project.
