Austin Butler Vows His ‘Getting Rid’ Of His Elvis Accent After Being Trolled Online

Austin Butler lost his Elvis accent on purpose.

The Golden Globe winner shared during her recent appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” that she “lost her accent” after some social media users pointed out that she still speaks like the late rocker.

Vocal coach Irene Bartlett said the actor didn’t fake an accent in an interview after the Golden Globes, saying Butler spent a lot of time practicing speaking like that, which made it difficult to lose the accent.

Butler will next star in the second installment of “Dune” alongside several Hollywood stars, including former wrestler Dave Bautista.

On her guest appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Butler acknowledged repeated social media speculation that she still speaks with an Elvis accent even though months have passed since filming wrapped on the movie.

Throughout the film’s three-year development, the 30-year-old actor immersed himself in his role as the late musician, receiving intensive vocal training and method acting.

However, he claims he is now actively working on getting rid of the accent, although he joked that his vocal cords have suffered significant damage from repeatedly singing several Elvis songs for the film.

“I’m getting rid of the accent, but I might have damaged my vocal cords with all that singing,” the actor said on the show, per Insider. “One song takes 40 takes.”

The biopic, directed by Baz Luhrman, debuts in June 2022, making more than three times its $85 million budget at the box office. It also received critical acclaim for the screenplay and Butler’s performance.

The actor won the 2023 Golden Globe for Best Actor thanks to his work in the film. While accepting his award, it became clear that he still had an Elvis accent in his voice.

Many online detractors think Butler intentionally kept his Elvis voice to benefit from the fame the role gave him. But those who work at Elvis have a different account.

Bartlett, one of Butler’s vocal coaches in the film, shared after the awards ceremony that the actress’ accent was real and not acted.

He also explained that getting rid of the accent was difficult because he spent too much time working on himself to perfect it.

Bartlett said, per Page Six“Due to the COVID lockdown, he’s working on it all the time and it’s hard to turn off something you’ve spent a lot of focus on [and] time above.”

Last year, Butler echoed Bartlett’s sentiments during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“At this point, I keep asking people, ‘Is this my voice?'” he said at the time, according to Insider. “It’s one of those things where certain things trigger it. When you live with something for two years, and you don’t do anything else, I think you can’t hold it. It becomes the fiber of your being.”

However, he later vehemently denied that he still retains the accent in an interview with the press backstage at the 2023 Golden Globes.

“I don’t think I still sound like him, but I guess I must because I listen to him all the time,” he said, per Insider. “I often compare it to when someone lives in another country for a long time. I had three years where that was my only focus, so I’m sure there’s a piece of him in my DNA, and I’ll always be associated with him.”

Austin Butler’s next major role will be starring Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two. His character is the brother of Glossu Rabban, played by former wrestler Dave Bautista.

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor recently shared that Butler has lost his accent, contrary to what social media users believed.

“I don’t know who this guy is, but it’s not Austin Butler,” Bautista said of Butler’s Dune character in an interview with USA Todayper Insider. “It’s not Elvis. His voice is different, he looks different. Everything about his demeanor is terrifying.”

He also commented on his co-star’s character saying the Golden Globe winner is “just the sweetest guy you’ll ever meet.”

“Dune 2” is expected to hit theaters in November 2023.
