Baby swept away in Tennessee tornado found alive ‘by the grace of God’ in unusual spot

A Tennessee couple and their two children are looking for a new home after a large tornado swept through their community and swept away their 4-month-old son, who was found alive in a nearby tree following the tragedy.

Sydney Moore, her boyfriend and their children were inside their home last Saturday in Clarksville when the EF-3 tornado, which killed six people and injured more than two dozen, touched down in Montgomery County.

Moore said the tornado, which destroyed the couple’s mobile home and other belongings, lifted their 4-month-old son, who survived the ordeal.

“Something inside of me just told me to run and jump on top of my son,” Moore told WSMV News Nashville of her efforts to protect her eldest, 1-year-old. “The moment I jumped on it, the wall collapsed.”

Recalling what happened that evening, Moore told the outlet that her boyfriend could see the tornado engulf their home before it was torn apart and the baby’s container was taken.

“The roof came off first, the tip of the tornado came down and took the bassinet with our baby,” he said. “He was the first one up.”

Moore said her boyfriend jumped to save the baby and ended up being thrown out of the house with the baby, who was sleeping at the time.

“He just held on to the bassinet the whole time, and they went in a circle,” Moore recalled.

Despite the circumstances, Moore said she and her family were able to escape the wreckage and find their baby, all while fearing the worst.

After about 10 minutes of searching, Moore said she and her boyfriend found the baby alive in a fallen tree in the rain.

“I thought he was dead,” he said. “I’m sure he’s dead and we’ll never find him. But he is here, and it is by the grace of God.”

“I will die for my children. That’s not a question, and my boyfriend would do the same thing,” added Moore.

Moore and her family were left with little or no personal belongings after the tragic incident, but the community reportedly rallied to support the young couple and their children by providing them with formula, diapers and other necessities.

Now, almost a week after the couple faced the tornado firsthand, the family is looking for a new home.

A member of the Moore family has also set up a GoFundMe to help the family rebuild and buy necessary items for themselves and their children.

Moore’s sister, Caitlyn, wrote in a GoFundMe listing that Moore and her children “came out with minor cuts and bruises” after the tornado destroyed their home. Moore’s boyfriend, however, according to the GoFundMe listing, “suffered a broken arm/shoulder.”

“This disaster has affected more than just this family, so I want to send my regards and prayers to all those affected,” Moore’s sister added in the fundraising listing.
