‘Bachelor’ Producer Warned Virtual Ceremony Would Be ‘Bad Idea’

Bachelor Nation watched “The Bachelor” Monday night where, for the first time, the show’s lead contracted and tested positive for COVID-19 during filming, prompting Zach Shallcross to hold his cocktail party and rose ceremony on Zoom.

Now, after the episode aired, “The Bachelor” executive producers Bennett Graebner and Nicole Woods and director Dave Miller, talked about the production at the moment, and how they felt it was in crisis and had to scramble to figure out what to do after finding out Shallcross tested positive for COVID-19.

Zach Shallcross is reportedly pretty adamant about not sending any of the ladies home until he’s met them and spent time with them as his group date and meeting with Charity Lawson got cancelled, meaning the only time he got to spend with one of the ladies this week was with Gabi Elnicki before his positive test.

“Talking to Zach, he’s pretty adamant that he won’t send anyone home without spending time with them. Choices are limited, and I believe they are limited [Disney/ABC exec] It was Rob Mills who said, ‘We should have a virtual cocktail party and a virtual rose ceremony,’” Graebner told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview.

Graebner later admitted he didn’t think Zoom’s idea would work. “In full disclosure, I thought it was a bad idea, and I told him,” he continued to explain before adding, “I said, ‘I really don’t think this is a good idea.’ He said, ‘Why? What are you so worried about?’ What worries me is, here we are two and a half years into a pandemic, where people are so tired of seeing people interacting on screens.”

The producers continued, “We have to project forward five months later when it airs, and I think people will be more tired and less interested in seeing people communicate on screen. I don’t support it for that reason.”

In addition to concerns that viewers are tired of Zoom meetings, the producers also explained how Bachelor Nation may disagree because this is not the reality television show they have “known and loved”.

“Honestly, I think it might look embarrassing,” he admits. “I remember telling Rob that, and he said, ‘Okay, let’s try it.’ So we sat down in a big group with our tech department, our audio department, our lighting department, our director here, to try to figure out how we were going to solve this — knowing that we couldn’t get into Zach’s room. “

Zoom Almost Becomes A Parody

Director Dave Miller also has his concerns — number one is that fans won’t take this seriously because some parts almost look like a “Saturday Night Live” drama.

“The first reaction was like, it felt like we were shooting an SNL skit or something. Don’t let it be that,” Miller explained to EW before adding, “There’s a lot of different turns we could have taken where it would have been a parody. And I think we’ve discover the next best thing. Like, if we can’t have two people in a room talking to each other, how can we create the best version of that virtually?”

That’s when they decided to use iPads because people are used to iPads and it’s a way for the women to hold Shallcross in their hands and move around the room comfortably.

“It’s a language people understand,” Miller explained. “So let the girls hold the iPad — so they can kiss the screen.”

The show continued with a virtual cocktail party, where Shallcross was able to have one-on-one conversations with women using iPads. For the rose ceremony, the show ended up putting the women in a small room, facing a large television screen with Shallcross’s face on it. A plate of roses sits in front of the TV so the women go up and pick their own roses after their names are called.

In the end, Shallcross decided to send Kylee Russell and Mercedes Northup home.

Zach Shallcross’ season of “The Bachelor” continues Mondays at 8pm ET on ABC. Episodes are available to stream the following day on Hulu.
